Last Thursday morning, the 21 Kentucky Derby participants held their routine training at Churchill Downs. One interesting piece of news from the previous days concerns farrier Ian McKinlay and his treatment methods for a quarter crack on Dornoch’s right front hoof.
McKinlay’s approach is akin to placing sutures on a cut, effectively pulling the crack together to prevent contraction and expansion. Importantly, McKinlay assures that this method is not only effective but also safe. He further explains that he will remove the wires, reset the crack, and patch it, ensuring a comprehensive and secure treatment process.
According to horse racing news reports, the quarter crack has not affected the horse’s training or running in the past, and he has not seen any lameness or heat symptoms.
According to Gargan, Dornoch will be fitted for a complete shoe on Saturday morning since he has been wearing a three-quarter shoe. Regarding the Longines Kentucky Oaks, Tapit Jenallie, owned by Willis Horton Racing, was ruled out of the race. As a result, Our Pretty Woman, owned by Courtlandt Farms, was drawn from the list of horses also eligible for the event by trainer Steve Asmussen. It is in Joel Rosario’s possession.

Training sessions will be shortened in the morning due to Friday’s 13-race program’s first post time of 10:30 a.m. (all times Eastern). After the 5:15–7:15 training session, there will be a brief break, and the 7:45–8 slot will be reserved for horses competing in the Oaks and Derby.
On a separate note, Thursday, just after the beginning of the 7:30 a.m. training time for Oaks and Derby horses, Tami Bobo, Julie Davies, and George Isaacs’ Catalytic visited the track. The Florida Derby (G1) runner-up raced for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. over 1.5 miles while ridden by Olaf Hernandez, a regular exercise rider.
According to sportsbook pay per head experts, the rarely raced horse will be ridden by Jose Ortiz in the Derby, starting from post 5. Catalytic has a 40-1 odds in the Derby advance betting after two days.
