WCC Championship: BYU and Gonzaga Tangle for Title
Zags and Cougars Meet in WCC Championship Game
The BYU Cougars and the 6th-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs will meet at Orleans Arena in the WCC Championship Game. Tip-off is set for 9 pm EST and ESPN will have the coverage.
Oddsmakers have Gonzaga as 9.5-point favorites. The total is set at 142.5.
BYU joined the West Coast Conference in 2012. They making their third appearance in the championship game. The Cougars lost to Gonzaga in 2014 and 2015. They got into this years game by upsetting 2nd-seed St. Mary’s 85-72.
Gonzaga Playing Great Ball Heading into WCC Championship Game
Killian Tillie is on a roll for the Zags. In two games, the 6-foot-10 sophomore forward has made all 10 of his 3-point attempts. He has scored 50 points and made 19 of 23 shots from the floor. He has led Gonzaga to its 21st consecutive WCC Championship game.
The Zags were 16-for-20 from the field on Monday to start the game against San Francisco. They led by as many as 23 in the first half en route to an 88-60 rout. In Saturday’s 83-69 win over Loyola Marymount, Gonzaga was at 80 percent shooting after halftime.
Gonzaga has won 13 straight games. They have a 16-game WCC Tournament winning streak. The Zags have won the tournament 15 times since 1999.
BYU Playing Well Also Heading into WCC Championship Game
BYU shot 61 percent on Monday against the St. Mary’s. They avenged a 31-point blowout loss to the Gaels in last year’s WCC Tournament.
The Cougars’ Yoeli Childs scored a career-high 33 points. He also helped contain Saint Mary’s standout Jock Landale, who was plagued by foul trouble.
Landale is the WCC Player of the Year. He finished with 23 points before fouling out with 21 seconds left. He was outscored by Childs 18-6 in the first half as the Cougars took a 41-37 lead at the break.
While Gonzaga has been a lock for the NCAA Tournament for quite some time, the Cougars will need a win on Tuesday to get int the tourney.
