Both Vancouver Canucks and Ottawa Senators Struggled

The 3-5-0 Vancouver Canucks host the 1-4-1 Ottawa Senators in a matchup between two clubs that have struggled out of the gate in the North Division. They will face off this Wednesday.

It’s the second of a three-game mini-series between these Canadian rivals. The Canucks came out on top 7-1 in their first matchup.

It’s been a similar story-line for Vancouver and Ottawa so far this season. Neither team has been able to keep pucks out of their own nets. They sit last and second to last in goals against per game as a result.

Canucks Had High Hopes on Season

After getting through two rounds of playoff action in 2020 and icing some of the more talented youngsters in the league to start the season, expectations were high for the Canucks in 2021.But Vancouver’s brightest stars, including Elias Pettersson (1 goal, 1 assist) and JT Miller (0 goals, 5 assists), have failed to show up so far.

Thatcher Demko made 35 saves for his first victory of the season as the Canucks won in regulation for the first time since their home opener on Jan. 13.

Tanner Pearson had a goal and an assist, and Tyler Motte, Quinn Hughes and Olli Juolevi also scored for the Canucks. It was the first NHL goal for Juolevi, the fifth overall pick in the 2016 draft. Bo Horvat added two assists.

Senators Had High Hopes as Well

Senators fans similarly expected their club to take the next step this season. Management brought in Evgenii Dadonov, Derek Stepan and Matt Murray. They were supposed to usher in a new era for Ottawa. Instead, Ottawa sits last in the North and already find themselves at risk of missing the playoffs yet again.

Forward Tim Stutzle, the third overall pick in the 2020 draft, returned to the Senators’ lineup Monday after missing three games with a wrist injury. Stutzle was a minus-4 in 12:37 on the ice.
