The Chiefs are returning as bigger favorites than they were last year at Super Bowl 54. This line would assuredly be larger if the game wasn’t essentially a home game for the Buccaneers.
The Chiefs have already beaten Tampa Bay in Week 12 of the regular season. The win required QB Patrick Mahomes to throw for a season-high 462 yards to pull out the victory. Tyreek Hill also had a season-high performance with 269 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
The Bucs almost pulled off one of QB Tom Brady’s signature late-game come-back wins with two fourth-quarter passing touchdowns to Mike Evans in their last meeting. They were behind the defending champs 27-24 as time ran out.
The Bucs’ defense won’t have to face Kansas City’s OT Eric Fisher, who will miss the Super Bowl due to an Achilles injury. He sustained it in their AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, is mostly healthy, but may be without the services of Jordan Whitehead, Antoine Winfield and Antonio Brown.
This, That, and a Dart Throw
QB Tom Brady will be making a 10th Super Bowl appearance on Sunday. It’s the first one with him donning a Tampa Bay Buccaneers jersey. The six-time Super Bowl champion has helped lead his new team to great heights this season. The Bucs’ elite defense has given him a shot in virtually every game. He has a talented crew of receivers as well.
The Buccaneers are 14-5 straight up and 11-8 against the spread.
They are definitely the healthier team of the two teams, but they have some question marks on defense heading into the game.
Safeties Antoine Winfield Jr. (ankle) and Jordan Whitehead (shoulder/knee) didn’t practice last week and will be evaluated closer to game time. Second-team All-Pro LB Lavonte David has a tender hamstring.
WR Antonio Brown (knee) has also been downgraded to doubtful.
The defending champion, Kansas City Chiefs, have at least as much talent as the Bucs, and maybe even more.
KC QB Patrick Mahomes is gunning for his second MVP in three years. He has the ability to make strong and accurate passes from seemingly-impossible angles. He can get the ball to Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce while being pressured from pass rushers on all sides. Once the ball is in either of their hands a touchdown is always possible.
Kansas City is 16-2 straight up and 8-10 against the spread.
The team took another hit in the injury department last week when rookie LB Willie Gay had surgery to repair a torn meniscus. This will keep him out of the Super Bowl. Gay had 29 tackles and a sack this year after the Chiefs drafted him in the second round. He has been a fixture on special teams all season. This injury could take on extra importance this Sunday in what looks like a close contest on paper.
