Super Bowl Performances can Cement Your Legend
by Charles Jay
Will we get a great quarterback performance out of Matthew Stafford, Joe Burrow or both on Super Bowl Sunday? We just might, if these teams decided that the ground game was going to become something less than a priority.
At BetAnySports, in the Prop Builder, you can wager on a passing yards prop between Stafford and Burrow, and the Rams’ quarterback is the favorite:

We could argue all day about what the greatest quarterback performances in Super Bowl history are, because stats don’t often tell the whole story, But they do tell some of the story, and in victory, here are some of them from years gone by that I would recognize, and not necessarily in order:
PHIL SIMMS, Super Bowl XXI
Simms, as I recall, has been trying to promote a poll on the CBS Sports website related to the greatest quarterback games in Super Bowl history, no doubt to pump up his own effort, in which he completed 22 of 25 passes for 268 yards (10.7 yards an attempt) and three touchdowns. That was near-perfection, and what many people don’t remember about that 39-20 Giant victory is that the score was 10-9 Broncos at the half, so Simms actually led a come-from-behind effort. Then, he presumably went to Disney World, the first Super Bowl winning quarterback to announce he was doing so.
STEVE YOUNG, Super Bowl XXIX
You can’t possibly ignore a Super Bowl where someone throws six touchdown passes. Young tossed a 44-yard strike to Jerry Rice on the third play from scrimmage, and it kind of went downhill from there for Bill Arnsparger’s San Diego defense. Three of Young’s TD passes were to Rice. Not only did Young throw for 325 yards, but he also rushed for 49 yards, which made him the leading passer AND rusher in the game.
KURT WARNER, Super Bowl XXXIV
Warner has the three highest totals of passing yards in Super Bowl history,.and we might have picked his 31-for-43, 377-yard performance last season against Pittsburgh, if not for the fact that he threw that interception right before the end of the half that was returned for the back-breaking touchdown by James Harrison. So we’ll settle for his record 414 yards against Tennessee, in which he threw no picks, connected for the dramatic 73-yard fourth-quarter TD pass with Isaac Bruce and led his St. Louis Rams to a victory.
DOUG WILLIAMS, Super Bowl XXII
Williams went 18 of 29 in the 42-10 trouncing of Denver, and his passes were good for 340 yards, giving him 11.7 yards an attempt. Williams had 228 yards and four touchdowns in the second quarter alone, and led his tam to more offensive yards (602) than any team in Super Bowl history. What made this performance all the more amazing was that Williams was in extreme pain, having undergone a six-hour root canal surgery the day before the game, and he went without sleep the night before the biggest day of his life.
JOE MONTANA, Super Bowl XXIII
When it comes to a guy who has completed 68% of his passes in Super Bowl competition, with 11 TD’s and no interceptions, we have to pick at least one of those performances. We could easily have gone with him in SB XXIV, where he completed 22 of 29 passes for five touchdowns in leading a 55-10 win against Denver. However, he cruised most of the way there. We prefer his effort against Cincinnati, when he set what was a Super Bowl record at the time with 357 yards and then, when the pressure was really on, led the final touchdown drive to win it for the Niners, hitting on eight of nine passes for 87 yards, ending with the TD to John Taylor with just 34 seconds left. Engineering that, and leaving the Bengals with almost no time to come back, was one of the great feats in the history of the Super Bowl.
