Those engaging in Super Bowl LVI betting this season know that Joe Burrow has an opportunity to have it all. It’s a rare triple crown for a football player . But this Heisman Trophy winner from two years ago shouldn’t take things for granted, because many of them never get there. In the odds that govern this year’s Super Bowl betting, the Los Angeles Rams are a four-point favorite over the Cincinnati Bengals, with a total of 48.5 points posted on the game.

The first player to win a Heisman Trophy, and NCAA national championship and a Super Bowl title did it in a hurry. Tony Dorsett, who had won the Heisman in 1976, then ran for 1007 yards with the Dallas Cowboys as a rookie. In doing so, he not only captured Rookie of the year honors, but also won Super Bowl XII with the Cowboys.
Then Charles Woodson, the All-Pro cornerback for the Green Bay Packers, won a national title at Michigan the same year he won the Heisman (1997). And in Super Bowl XLV, he won a Super Bowl ring.
Some others guys came close. For example, Billy Cannon won a national title at LSU as well as a national champiuonship. And he also played in Super Bowl II with the Oakland Raiders, who lost to the Green Bay Packers 33-14. John Huarte, who won the Heisman at Notre Dame in 1964 for a team that lost only one game, was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs when they won Super Bowl IV over Minnesota. Cam Newton, a two-time national champion (with Florida, then Auburn) and a Heisman winner, came up short in Super Bowl 50 when he was finishing up a league MVP season with the Carolina Panthers.
Heisman Trophy Winners Play a Part of Super Bowls
To this day, there have been four Heisman Trophy winners who have also won the Super Bowl’s Most Valuable Player award. They are:
* Roger Staubach, Dallas – Super Bowl VI
* Jim Plunkett, Oakland – Super Bowl XV
* Marcus Allen, L.A. Raiders – Super Bowl XVIII
* Desmond Howard, Green Bay – Super Bowl XXXI
Getting the chance to play in the Super Bowl is nothing for a Heisman winner to take for granted. Just look who never had the chance to shine on football’s biggest stage. The 1986 Heisman Trophy winner, Vinny Testaverde, played 21 years in the NFL and threw touchdown passes to 70 different receivers, but never played in a Super Bowl. Neither did Bo Jackson or O.J. Simpson. Charlie Ward got a chance to play in the NBA Finals (when he was with the New York Knicks). But there wasn’t any Super Bowl bet that ever involved him.
Doug Flutie played 21 seasons in professional football, and captured three Grey Cups, but never a Super Bowl. His New Jersey Generals (USFL) teammate, Herschel Walker, competed in the Winter Olympics, but never played in a Super Bowl. Walker, however, can be credited for a connection to a championship winner, although he would personally consider it dubious.
Remember that he was the “bait” in the major trade that brought so many players and draft picks from the Minnesota Vikings to the Dallas Cowboys in 1989. And the Cowboys became a winning Super Bowl bet a few times after that.
Playing in the Big Game is Not as Easy as it Seems
Tim Brown played 16 seasons with the Raiders, and had to wait until the last season of his storied career to finally make it to the Super Bowl (2003).
So this kind of gives you an idea of how unusual an opportunity this is for Burrow, who is in only his second season as a pro. He led the league in accuracy. He is the top-graded quarterback in the league at Pro Football Focus. And now he can become the only QB to have a Heisman Trophy, national championship ring (from LSU) and Super Bowl ring. And to think he was sitting behind J.T. Barrett (who I think just signed with the Canadian Football League) at Ohio State!
