Rays Host Yankees Look for Sweep of 2 Game Set

Tampa Bay Rays Baseball

Playoff Implications are High for Rays

The New York Yankees have clinched the American League East, but the Tampa Bay Rays can still make the playoffs if they can hold onto the last AL Wild Card berth. The Rays haven’t made things easy on themselves. They have trailed in their last eight games but they’ve managed to win five of them.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees LH J.A. Happ (12-8, 5.01 ERA) vs. Rays RH Charlie Morton (15-6, 3.15)

Tampa Bay’s Ji-Man Choi has turned into He-Man Choi of late. The Rays are damn sure glad for it as Yankees on Wednesday in the finale of their two-game series. Choi belted a walk-off home run in the 12th inning to give the Rays a 2-1 victory Tuesday. The blast kept them one-half game ahead of Cleveland for the final American League wild card spot. Choi’s three-run homer helped Tampa Bay defeat Boston 7-4 on Monday.

The Rays are unusually healthy heading into the home stretch. Not so for the Yankees. DH Edwin Encarnacion (.875 OPS) is completing his recovery from a strained oblique. Catcher Gary Sanchez (.849 OPS) isn’t expected back from his strained groin until New York’s season-ending series against the Texas Rangers. SS Gleybar Torres (.889 OPS) is considered day-to-day after tweaking his hamstring on Friday.

New York, which is 5-5 in its last 10 games. They have fell one game behind Houston for the best record in baseball. Tampa Bay ace Charlie Morton makes what will likely be his final start of the regular season Wednesday while the Yankees’ J.A. Happ will start. C.C. Sabathia will serve as a reliever in the postseason will follow in relief.
