Pure Michigan 400 Preview
- The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will compete for a trip to Victory Lane on Sunday afternoon as they race in the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
A.J. Allmendinger picked up the first Sprint Cup Series victory of his career last time out, holding off Marcos Ambrose to take the checkered flag in the Cheez-It 355 at The Glen at Watkins Glen International.
Ambrose, Kurt Busch, Kyle Larson, and Carl Edwards rounded out the top five drivers on the road course at Watkins Glen, with Joey Logano, Kevin Harvick, Greg Biffle, Matt Kenseth, and Brian Vickers making up the rest of the Top 10 on the afternoon.
Dale Earnhardt Jr., who ended up in 11th place at Watkins Glen, now holds a five-point lead on Jeff Gordon atop the Sprint Cup Series driver standings, with Kenseth 70 points behind in third place.
Logano won the Pure Michigan 400 last season, with Harvick, Busch, Paul Menard, and Clint Bowyer rounding out the top five drivers at that Sprint Cup Series event. Jimmie Johnson won the Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan in June.
After racing at Michigan the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will move on to Bristol Motor Speedway for the Irwin Tools Night Race on August 23. The final race of the month is then the Oral-B USA 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway on August 31.
