  • There are a number of challengers to the Avalanche primarily coming from the Atlantic Division.

With the NHL season now past the All-Star break, the Stanley Cup futures race is tightening up at the top of the board. The Colorado Avalanche continue to hold the favorite position at +425.

There has been some recent movement and the Atlantic Division appears to have a hold on several of the top spots. Three of the top six spots and four of the top nine are occupied by Atlantic Division teams.

NHL Stanley Cup Futures – The Favorite

The Avalanche have been the overall favorite since the preseason, and rightfully so. Colorado has the NHL’s most wins (39) and points (82). The Avs have now won 27 of their last 32 games.

Colorado has five skaters with 50 or more points thus far and their best player – Nathan MacKinnon – has the least of the five with 51. He missed some time with injuries but is back at full strength.

Goalie Darcy Keumper has been outstanding too with a record of 26-6-2. Keumper ranks 11th in the league in both save percentage and goals against average. He’s also a big part of why the Avs are given +425 odds. The favorite when looking at Stanley Cup futures.

Red Hot Panthers

Florida is the NHL’s top-scoring team and the only team averaging more than four goals per game (4.08). With a strong start to the season, the Panthers went from +2000 to +900 at top offshore bookmakers.

Now, they are down to +600 and just behind Colorado on the board. Jonathan Huberdeau is No. 2 in the league in scoring with 75 points and the Panthers have nine players with double-digit goals.

Top Challengers – Stanley Cup Futures

Two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay (+750) is in the mix as they have been for the past several seasons. The Lightning are in second place in the Atlantic Division and trail Florida by a single point, 75-74, in the standings.

Vegas, which is third in the Pacific Division, is given the same odds – +750 – to win this year’s Stanley Cup. Sports bettors would be keen to know the Golden Knights are just three points behind Calgary in the Pacific Division.

Big Movers & Shakers

Toronto finds itself among the top five NHL teams on the board. The Maple Leafs odds dropped to +900 after a week in which they beat Carolina and knocked the Hurricanes out of the top five.

Both teams have strong lineups and are playing well. The Maple Leafs are third in the Atlantic Division while the Hurricanes lead a very strong Metropolitan Division. Carolina is now listed at +1000 and second-place Pittsburgh checks in at +1500 in the last Stanley Cup futures.

The Penguins went on a tear throughout December and January. Over a 19 game stretch, the Pens lost just three times. Their streak took them from +3000 odds down to +1600 and their current play has taken them down to +1500.

I am going for the Avalanche but I am very curious if Tampa can still climb up higher. would be nice to see them with a back to back championship.
