There is a big showdown in the NFC South this Sunday. The NFL sends the 4-3 Atlanta Falcons on the road to face the 5-3 Carolina Panthers in a 1 p.m. start on FOX from Bank of America Stadium.
BetAnySports has opened the Panthers as two-point home favorites and the total has been set at 43.5 points. The line now has the Falcons as 2.5-point road favorites. The total has dropped to 42.5.
Carolina’s recent offensive woes has resulted in two losses in its last three games (both SU and ATS). The team has only scored a grand total of just 43 points. The Panthers now have a 4-3-1 record ATS. They have a 5-3 SU record through the first half of the season.
The total stayed UNDER 46 points in Sunday’s 17-3 victory against Tampa Bay. The Panthers were a slight 1.5-point underdog on the road. The Panthers return home with a 0-2-1 record ATS in three previous home games this season.
Cam Newton and the Carolina offense has been sputtering along the past three weeks. The Panthers defense has played well all season. It has continued to show up each and every week this year. The dominating squad is holding opponents to an average of 17.8 points per game. The Panthers D is ranked second in the NFL in total yards allowed at 264.0 yards per game.
Last Sunday against the Buccaneers, the Panthers posted three turnovers while sacking Jameis Winston three times to hold him below 200 yards passing on the day.
Falcons Offense Needs to Get in Sync to Compete
The Falcons schedule over the past month included four-straight games against a team from the AFC East. The result was a straight-up 1-3 record while going 0-4 against the spread. The Falcons avoided a sweep by the AFC East by beating the Jets 25-20 in New York.
The Falcons were listed as 6.5-point favorites. The late scores also took the total OVER 43 points. Falcons games had stayed UNDER BetAnySports’ closing line in the previous three games. Atlanta is now 2-5 against the spread this season.
Atlanta’s offense with veteran quarterback Matt Ryan at the helm could never really get on track during this four-game span. The team had an average of 16.5 points per game. That is well below a season average of 21.9 points per game that is now ranked 16th in the NFL.
The Falcons are still fifth in total yards gained behind a balanced attack of passing and running the ball.
Both of these NFC South rivals have struggled on offense lately. These teams have each shown the ability to put points on the board this season.
