Detroit Lions Can Clinch NFC North
Two NFC teams with high aspirations for the postseason will clash in a late-season showdown this Sunday. The 9-4 Detroit Lions square off against the 9-4 New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in a 1 p.m. start on FOX. BetAnySports has listed the Giants as four-point home favorites. The total for this game is now at 41, after opening at 44.

Detroit’s current straight-up winning streak reached five games with this past Sunday’s 20-17 victory at home against Chicago. The Lions failed to cover as 7.5-point favorites. With BetAnySports closing line they fall to 4-1 against the spread during this same stretch. They are 8-5 ATS on the year. The total has stayed UNDER in their last seven games. Detroit has covered the spread in five of seven games this season when closing as an underdog.
Matthew Stafford continues to be one of the most prolific passers in the NFL. He has 3,447 total passing yards and 22 touchdown throws. But the real story has been the Lions’ defense that has this team in great position to win the NFC North Division title this season. This unit has not given up more than 20 points during this five-game run. It is ranked 10th overall in the NFL in points allowed (20.6).
Manning Looks Clinch New York Giants Playoff Birth With Win
New York has now pinned two losses on the NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys with Sunday night’s 10-7 grinder as a 3.5-point underdog at home with BetAnySports. The Giants improved to 6-5-1 ATS this season and the total has stayed UNDER in their last five games. They are 4-3 ATS in seven pervious home games this year and they have gone 4-3-1 ATS when closing as favorites.
Eli Manning is another veteran quarterback that knows how to move an offense quickly down the field through the air, but he only threw for 193 yards and a score in Sunday night’s upset. This is another team that is currently riding its defense right into the playoffs. New York is 25th in the NFL in scoring with an average of 19.6 points a game, but it moves all the way up to seventh when it comes to points allowed (18.8).
Both teams need a win this Sunday to enhance their position in the playoffs so I would look for another hard-fought battle that is dominated by defense. This, in turn, will keep the final score UNDER BetAnySports’ current 41-point total line.
Here are the scenarios for the teams to clinch playoffs births and/or Division Titles:
Detroit Lions can clinch the NFC North division title with:
1) DET win + GB loss or tie OR
2) DET tie + GB loss + MIN loss or tie
New York can clinch a playoff berth with:
1) NYG win + WAS loss + MIN loss or tie + GB loss or tie
