NFL Week 12: Tennessee Titans @ Indianapolis Colts

Indianapolis Colts Football

Are the Indianapolis Colts Ready to Take Control of AFC South?

Don’t look now, but the Indianapolis Colts are in position to take control of the AFC South on Sunday as they prepare to host the Tennessee Titans. The Colts doubled up the Titans two weeks ago in Nashville and then held off the Green Bay Packers in overtime this past weekend.

After this coming weekend they get to play Houston twice, Jacksonville one more time – and also visit Pittsburgh and Las Vegas. Even so, they would have the sweep as a tiebreaker over the Titans, who have lost three of five. They did pick up a big road win in Baltimore this weekend over the Ravens. Don’t miss our preview of this Sunday matinee.

Why the Titans Will Win

Tennessee is just 3-3 in their last six overall, but they have been better on the road as of late, winning three of four away from Nashville. Ryan Tannehill continues to manage ball security well, with just four picks on the season, and his touchdown passes are going back up. On the ground, Derrick Henry continues to dominate, with 1,079 and nine scores on the season – including a 29-yard bulldozing of the Ravens’ defense to win Sunday’s game in overtime.

On defense, the Titans need to tighten up, permitting almost 26 points and 389 yards per game. Harold Landry III leads the pass rush unit with 3 ½ sacks, and Amani Hooker leads the team with three picks. Tennessee will have to play two road games in a row here, and they needed to expend a lot of energy to beat Baltimore. That could lead to fatigue – or it could get them on a roll. Their defense will need to stand tall against a Colts offense that has four 30+ point performances in their last five games.

Why the Colts Will Win

Philip Rivers threw three touchdown passes and an interception against Green Bay, but the Packers have struggled to stop the pass this season. He has a decent completion rate of 68.5% and may be building confidence ahead of a playoff run. On the ground, Jonathan Taylor is the top gainer with 518 yards and four scores.

Indianapolis prospers because of their defense. They permit 20.8 points per game (a number that edged over the 20-point line after that overtime matchup with the Packers). Denico Autry has posted six sacks for a terrific pass rush unit. If the Colts can keep gashing the Titans’ defense like they did a couple of weeks ago, this could get ugly again. Indianapolis has won four of their last five games against the Titans.

The Final Word

I see the Titans putting up more of a fight against Indianapolis than they did in the first meeting, and I know that the ticking time bomb known as Philip Rivers will come due for the Colts soon. Give me the Titans to cover on the road.

The Dart Throw: Colts 27, Titans 21
