NFL Thursday Night Football Opens With Prime Matchup for 2022 Season

By Charles Jay

Thursday Night Football and the start of the 2022 season are here. Are the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Rams the two best teams in the National Football League? Well, let’s put it this way – the Rams are the defending Super Bowl champions, while the Bills are the favorites at BetOnline to win the Super Bowl THIS season (+575).

And because the NFL is a television league, the Bills and Rams are going to kick off the season at 8:20 PM ET in what is a big start to Amazon’s Thursday night football series.

Buffalo, as you know, suffered bitter defeat when the Kansas City Chiefs bested them in overtime in the AFC playoffs. The Chiefs then went on to lose to the Cincinatti Bengals, who lost to the Rams in the Super Bowl.

At the moment, the Bills are a 2.5-point favorite, with a posted total of 52 points.

NFL Thursday Night Football Odds — About the Buffalo Bills

Everyone knows that the Bills are an imposing team on defense. They led the league last season with just 5.5 yards per pass attempt allowed. They surrendered fewer yards and points than anyone. And they were also the third best team in terms of “stuff rate,” which designates the percentage of the time a defensive front holds the opponent to no gain or throws them for a loss.

What might be most impressive about these guys is that they did not allow the opposition to complete a long pass all year, and that was even after they lost cornerback Tre’ White to an ACL injury. That’s important to remember because White is not ready to return to action. Kaiir Elam was drafted in the first round out of the University of Florida, so he’ll get some playing time.

Another newcomer from whom they are looking for a big impact is Von Miller, who played for the Rams last season and earned himself a Super Bowl ring, but grabbed big money as a free agent. With him, Buffalo’s sack total might jump (it was 42 last year).

Everyone knows what Josh Allen is capable of; he had 4407 yards and 36 TD’s in 2021. He is a vital cog in the ground game as well. Cole Beasley left, but Jamison Crowder was signed and will presumably take his place alongside Stefon Diggs at WR. Mike Shula and Joe Brady (Joe Burrow’s ex-tutor) were added to the offensive staff.

NFL Thursday Night Football Odds — About the Los Angeles Rams

BetOnline has the Rams priced at +1200 to repeat as Super Bowl champions. Not everyone has come back. We mentioned that Miller took off, but they also aren’t as deep at wide receiver, so Van Jefferson and new acquisition Allen Robinson have to distract opposing defenses away from Cooper Kupp (145 catches for 1947 yards last season).

Let’s see if this ground attack can take itself to a new level. There is no doubt about the talents of Darrell Henderson and Cam Akers, but they have to stay healthy. Los Angeles averaged 99 rushing yards a game, and that was way down the list.

As you know, the defense has stars. Aaron Donald is a perennial defensive player of the year candidate. And Jalen Ramsey can shut down the opposing team’s best wide receiver. But they’ll need some support for Ramsey; safety Eric Weddle unretired, then retired again. Cornerback Darious Williams left for Jacksonville.
