2022 NFL Preseason is Kicking Off Tonight in Canton, Ohio in the Hall of Fame Game
By Charles Jay
Both the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars have gone through coaching changes in the off-season. And BetAnySports patrons know that both squads are seeking to steer clear of the controversy that plagued them last year. We’re not sure the opening game of the preseason schedule is going to tell us all that much, but they will get things underway, and with a new look, on Thursday night at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. It’s kicking off at around 8 PM ET and will air on ESPN.
The Raiders, of course, had to endure the forced resignation of Jon Gruden, whose emails revealed a series of rather incendiary remarks Rick Bisaccia, the special teams coach, took over for him and guided Las Vegas to a playoff berth, where they lost to the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Jaguars were a mess right from the start with Urban Meyer as the head coach. The conversion from college to the pro ranks met with nothing but problems for Meyer, and it kind of spoiled things for rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who had been the first pick in the draft. Meyer was let go before the 2021 season was over, and in the off-season the team hired Doug Pederson, who won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles.
So a “fresh start” would appear to be part of the theme as the 2022 season begins.

NFL Preseason Betting — Here are the numbers…
In the odds that have been posted at BetAnySports on this game, the Raiders are the favorites:
Las Vegas Raiders -2.5
Jacksonville Jaguars +2.5
Over 30.5 points -110
Under 30.5 points -110
NFL Preseason Betting — A little about the Jags
Lawrence had 3,641 passing yards last season. He also threw 17 interceptions, and it was no secret that the antics of Meyer were a distraction for him all season long. Under Pederson, a former NFL quarterback, there’s a real chance for him to make some progress. We’ll have to see some of that later, however, as he is not slated to play in this game.
And neither is running back Trevor Etienne, Lawrence’s teammate from Clemson who was also drafted in the first round last year. He sat out with a Lisfranc injury, but even though Pederson intends to be careful with him at this point, that’s not the reason he won’t be playing.
The starting quarterback for the Jaguars on Thursday is not CJ Beathard, but Jake Luton, a sixth-round draft pick (Oregon State) in 2020 who has thrown 110 passes in the NFL and been intercepted six times.
NFL Preseason Betting — A little about the Raiders
Despite taking the Silver and Black to the postseason in an interim role, Bisaccia was not retained. Instead, owner Mark Davis made the move to hire Josh McDaniels, who has done two tours of duty as offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots and has also been the head coach with the Denver Broncos. Naturally, McDaniels’ star pupil is David Carr, who has been invited to play in three Pro Bowls and had a career high of 4,804 passing yards last season.
McDaniels’ objective is to install as much of his New England offense as possible during camp. If you remember, when McDaniels took the Denver job, he had Kyle Orton looking like a Hall of Famer; well, at least for a while.
Much of the excitement surrounds the addition of Davante Adams. The former Packer, considered by some to be the best receiver in the NFL, more or less engineered a trade for himself, and now he joins Carr, who was his teammate at Fresno State. Of course, working with Carr was a major incentive for him to seek the deal. He feels as if Carr has the ability to get to the Hall of Fame, which is where his ex-teammate, Aaron Rodgers, is headed.
NFL Preseason Betting — Our conclusion
Carr is not likely to be a big factor on Thursday night. We’re not sure what the Raiders are ultimately going to do with Jarrett Stidham, but the former Patriots backup QB knows the system. Nick Mullens is dependable as far as second or third-string options are concerned.
Kyle Sloter was one of the top players in the “new” USFL, and he is a recent Jacksonville signee who will be battling for a spot as the third-string quarterback. How far he can get right off the bat with limited time in camp is another question. As a choice between these two, we’d lay the points.
