NFL Betting Odds — Browns-Texans: Is Watson’s return really anything to celebrate?

Cleveland Browns Football

The Browns are Expecting a Hostile Crowd Against the Texans Sunday

By Charles Jay

The Cleveland Browns mortgaged a considerable portion of their future when they made the deal to bring DeShaun Watson into the fold. The Houston Texans are waiting.

They also invited a lot of criticism for heaping untold rewards upon someone who, in the mind of some, did not deserve to play.

The NFL concurred with that perspective, at least to some extent, as they suspended him until, well, Monday, when he was reinstated. In fact, they felt strongly enough about it that after an arbiter ruled that he should be suspended for six games, they appealed and wanted him out for the season. The settlement was eleven games.

When he takes the field on Sunday, it will be almost two years since he played in an NFL regular season game.

And by coincidence (we’re not so cynical that we think this was marketing-related) he is coming back against his old team, the Houston Texans.

So what BetAnySports customers have to be concerned with is what this guy brings to the table at the moment. Oddsmakers an/or the public apparently feel as if the Browns, who have been somewhat stagnant through the air, are going to get a shot in the arm with his presence.

Or maybe it’s just that the Texans are THAT bad.

NFL Betting Odds — The sideshow in the Browns vs Texans Matchup

Watson has settled 24 lawsuits in connection with his sexual misconduct. Apparently on the advice of counsel, he does not answer any questions from the media about the suits or the incidents. Still, attorney Tony Buzbee is bringing ten of the victims to the game, where they will be sitting in a luxury box at NRG Stadium.  They just want people to know they’re still there. Hmmmm, okay.

Watson has not only made the settlements, he’s paid the $5 million fine as well, although it’s a drop in the bucket when compared to his $230 million contract.

NFL Betting Odds — The old mates

You have to imagine that if there is any game the 1-9-1 Texans are going to be pumped up for, it’s this one. Watson wanted out of Houston, badly. He didn’t want to stick it out with his teammates, who were experiencing a “rebuild.” Of course, his story would be different. The way he looks at it, the front office and ownership threw in the towel, by trading DeAndre Hopkins, among other things.

The quarterback’s position was that he was assured that when a new coach and/or general manager were sought, that he would be “consulted” about it. That didn’t happen,. According to some, he was looking for an African-American to be named to both spots, and when a white GM (Nick Caserio) was hired, he wanted out, demanding a trade. That’s when his personal trouble started.

The Texans were written off completely without him. And truth be told, the critics were correct. With Davis Mills and now Kyle Allen, they are not in good shape at the quarterback position. But like those aforementioned victims, they want to show him that they are still there and need to be accounted for.

NFL Betting Odds — How this might go

Remember that Watson did have an opportunity to get acquainted with some of his new teammates during training camp. But that work wasn’t extensive. Obviously he had to get started sometime. And this is where it happens.

Houston benched Mills last week, going with Allen, the former Texas A&M quarterback, and he went 26 of 39 for 215 yards and two INT’s. Yes, the Texans are last in total offense. They have also been sub-par stopping the run, giving up 4.9 yards per carry. The Browns average 4.9 ypc, and they are, of course, led by Nick Chubb, one of the league’s e;lite backs (1039 yards). Running the ball sounds like a good game plan.

Two things to keep in mind about Watson here – he is going to be rusty, with this two-year hiatus. And his style has been to get the ball down the field, as he has a career average of nine Intended Air Yards per attempt. That won’t necessarily lend itself to accuracy.

What we’re saying is that this looks like a relatively low-scoring game to us, which means there is some room in this posted total to go UNDER. I would also take the “under” at 234.5 passing yards with a price of -130.
