Herbert and the LA Chargers Try to Dent Denver Broncos Defense
By Charles Jay
It was not a pretty picture for the Denver Broncos when they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. And if there was a poison icing on the cake, it was Teddy Bridgewater, who failed to make an effort to tackle Darius Slay, who brought back a fumble for a touchdown. That should have been a good situation for Denver, but it ended with a 30-13 defeat in which they were stomped on the ground. The Broncos are lucky there are three wild cards in each conference, because they still have some playoff life. But BetAnySports customers engaged in NFL betting have to be asking themselves how much “authority” Bridgewater has in the locker room, especially if it is a reflection of what is being said in the media.
So there is that doubt as they go into their Sunday game against the Los Angeles Chargers (4:05 PM ET at Empower Field).

NFL Betting — Conservative approach may be best for Denver
Bridgewater is usually a guy who throws with some accuracy, and he’s completed 69%, but with little risk there is little reward. Actually that might be just the way head coach Vic Fangio prefers it. And the Broncos do have an emerging ground game. Melvin Gordon is the veteran presence and leading rusher who has scored five touchdowns. Rookie Javonte Williams is drawing raves as he has already become one of the best in the NFL at breaking tackles. In their role splitting carries, they are over 1000 yards combined.
NFL Betting — Herbert is the guy who has to be slowed
Justin Herbert proved how “NFL-ready” he was when he won the Rookie of the Year award. Literally, he stepped right in, and on short notice if you recall, and started taking over. Currently he’s a 66% passer with 22 touchdowns, and his upside is obviously greater than Bridgewater’s. he’s also pretty good on deep throws, as he has the league’s highest passer rating on attempts of 20 yards or more past the line of scrimmage. But the criticism is that he doesn’t do it enough, and as we’ll explain, that part of the game may be taken away from him here.

NFL Betting — Fangio: The mentor
These head coaches are pretty close. It would, in fact, be safe to say that Brandon Staley of the Chargers is a disciple of Fangio. He was an assistant in both Denver and Chicago (where Fangio was defensive coordinator). Then he became the Rams’ D-coordinator before switching locker rooms at SoFi Stadium. At least he didn’t have to break out the moving van for his new job.
His philosophy is similar to that of Fangio, which is to play with two safeties deep in order to take away explosive plays, especially on first and second down. The downside is that they are not available for run support, simply because they are not asked to offer it. So you might see numbers that reflect it. The Chargers have given up more rushing yards per game than any other team, for instance. But Denver’s defensive setup may have the greater effect here, since they design themselves to take away what Herbert does best.
NFL Betting — So what’s the verdict?
The Broncos, with their 1-2 punch at running back, should find themselves in some decent drives. And Fangio was able to confuse Herbert in the two meetings last year, especially in his ability to disguise coverages. Perhaps the teacher still holds the upper hand over the student?
Yes, Bridgewater tanked that critical play. Yes, he didn’t want to risk getting injured. And yes, we’re sure he has caught some flak over it. This becomes a challenge for the Broncos to deal with the mid-range passing attack, where Keenan Allen and Mike Williams (who caught all 13 targeted passes thrown at them against Pittsburgh) excel. But we’ll expect that Fangio has a trick or two up his sleeve. And may his guys can do a little smashmouth – enough to prevail.
