NBA Odds: Shumpert and Smith Give Cavs Perimeter Support
The Cleveland Cavaliers have made waves with a decision to ship shooting guard Dion Waiters out of town. The trade is a three-team deal that will bring Cleveland Iman Shumpert and JR Smith. The Cavaliers’ NBA odds have been sliding, no doubt because LeBron James is out with an injury.

In short, the deal gives the Cavs an established perimeter defender and a boom-or-bust three-point shooter. Considering that it only cost Waiters, a disappointing high draft pick, and Lou Amundsen and Alex Kirk, the move could pay dividends.
Although Smith hasn’t matched the 18.1 points per game he posted in the 2012-2013 season, he’s an explosive wing player and can put points on the board off the bench or as a starter.
Having apparently approved the deal to acquire Smith, a teammate who comes with his own baggage, James will take solace in the fact that his franchise is clearing out some of the stopgap solutions they were forced to put in place when he originally left for Miami.
Waiters clashed with point guard Kyrie Irving and became defunct when James and Kevin Love joined, so now that he’s out of the picture there’s more room on the court for the rest of the squad. The Cavaliers odds to win the championship have dropped to 6/1.
