NASCAR Bojangles’ Southern 500 Preview from Darlington
The drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will return from a one-week break on Sunday, September 6 when they compete in the Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
Joey Logano took the checkered flag for the second straight year in the Irwin Tools Night Race, beating Kevin Harvick across the finish line for the victory at Bristol last time out.
Denny Hamlin, Jimmie Johnson, and Clint Bowyer rounded out the top five drivers at Bristol, with Brad Keselowski, Carl Edwards, Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Ryan Newman making up the rest of the Top 10 on the night.
With just two more races until the Chase begins 10 of the 16 postseason spots have been clinched by Johnson, Matt Kenseth, Harvick, Logano, Earnhardt Jr., Kurt Busch, Martin Truex Jr., Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, and Edwards.
Kyle Busch, who has four wins on the season, has to be in the Top 30 of the points standings when the Chase field is set to qualify for the postseason; he sits in 29th place.
Harvick paid out at the Bojangles’ Southern 500 last year, beating Earnhardt Jr., Johnson, Kenseth, and Greg Biffle across the finish line. Kenseth was the winner at Darlington back in the 2013 season.
After racing at Darlington the drivers of the Sprint Cup Series will move on to Richmond International Raceway for the Federated Auto Parts 400 on September 12. The other September races take place at Chicagoland and New Hampshire.
