One of the Fiercest NFL Rivalries, Chiefs and Raiders Battle on Monday Night Football
By Charles Jay
Week Five of the 2022 NFL Season comes to a close with Monday Night Football. The Las Vegas Raiders battle the Kansas City Chiefs. Las Vegas gave Josh McDaniels his second shot at being a head coach in the off-season, in the latest instance of a team hoping that Bill Belichick’s “magic dust” can spread itself around.
McDaniels, who has served a couple of stints with Belichick’s New England staff as offensive coordinator, has also been the head coach in Denver, and then took the job at Indianapolis, until doing an infamous about-face (kind of like what Belichick did with the Jets). The word was that McDaniels was being positioned as the heir apparent. But that didn’t materialize.
He needs to turn around the Silver and Black’s fortunes pretty quickly to beat back the boo birds. And that is why Arrowhead Stadium might be an unfortunate place to be on Monday night as his team takes on the Kansas City Chiefs.
And speaking of the Chiefs, they had a bit of a hiccup against the Indianapolis Colts, but have won the other three, including a 41-31 verdict over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week.

Monday Night Football Odds & Preview — Should we expect mastery from the Chiefs Mahomes?
Mahomes has thrown eleven touchdown passes with only two interceptions. He is likely to face a defense which is prepared to take away the deep ball. But without Tyreek Hill, Mahomes is not uncomfortable with throwing underneath. That’s where he’ll find Travis Kelce, who is arguably the best tight end in the business.
Last year the Chiefs manhandled the Raiders in two meetings by a combined total of 89-23. Mahomes had 662 yards through the air in those two games.
Hill (now with Miami) was perhaps the scariest receiver in the league. Kansas City has added veterans like Juju Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who are capable but don’t possess the same punch.
Monday Night Football Odds & Preview — The red zone woes we mentioned
The case can be made that the Raiders would be in a much different position right now if they could get the ball over the goal line when they get in the red zone. But the fact is, they are worst in the NFL in that regard through the first four games.
They have converted with a touchdown just 44.4% of the time. Carr’s accuracy rate in the red zone has been horrific (38.2%). And that explains part of the story as to why a team that has scored points on 50% of its drives (a league-high figure) can be 1-3 at the moment.
Mahomes is kind of nifty when he gets in close. He’s got ten TD passes without an interception, hitting at a 62.5% rate. And while KC is permissive in red zone situations, Vegas is THE most permissive (76.9% touchdowns).
Monday Night Football Odds & Preview — What we’re thinking of the Raiders vs Chiefs Matchup
We know that Davante Adams, who played with Derek Carr at Fresno State, can make a difference in this offense. But we were surprised to see that his connection percentage with Carr was only 55.6%. We would have expected something higher.
Maintaining a “balancing act” may be difficult for the Raiders on Monday; the Chiefs, who have faced only 31% running plays from opponents, have allowed just 3.3 yards per carry.
The Raiders have won only two of the last 15 meetings. We’re not sure we mentioned that. And KC is 9-2 ATS in the last eleven encounters at Arrowhead. Carr has a career 81.7 passer rating against the Chiefs. That’s exceedingly low. And even though Kansas City and Mahomes have covered seven of their last 24 laying a field goal or more, the Raider games have constituted most of those covers.
It’s probably a better idea for us to lay the points than not to.
