Giants Look for Better Effort on Monday Night Football
The Detroit Lions and the New York Giants will battle on Monday Night Football to end the 2nd week of the NFL season. The Lions and Giants will meet at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is set for 8:30 pm EST and will be broadcast by ESPN.
Oddsmakers opened the Giants as -5-point favorites versus the Lions on Monday Night Football. The game’s total opened at 43.5. The Giants are now 3-point favorites and the total has dropped to 42.
New York was a 19-3 loser in week #1 on the road against the Dallas Cowboys. They failed to cover the +6-point spread as underdogs, while the total score of 22 sent UNDER bettors to the payout window. Monday the team will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Giants Super Bowl XLII championship. They are looking for a better effort than was given last week against Dallas.
The New York offense was mostly revamped in the offseason. The additions of receiver Brandon Marshall, tight ends Rhett Ellison and Evan Engram were key additions. The promotion of Paul Perkins to starting running back hasn’t played out yet. But last week they couldn’t get out of their own way against a Cowboys defensive front that had its way against the returning five starting Giants offensive linemen.
Missing Pro Bowl wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. didn’t help. It is unclear if he will play this week, either.
Lions Looking to Start 2-0 Under Resurgent Stafford
Detroit was a 35-23 winner at home against the Arizona Cardinals in week #1 action. They covered the +2.5-point spread as underdogs, while the combined score (58) was profitable news for OVER bettors. Matthew Stafford rallied Detroit from a 17-9 third-quarter deficit to score 19 unanswered points. Add in a 35-yard pick-6 by safety Miles Kilbrew and you have one heck of a comeback.
Stafford has dethroned Manning as the comeback king. He has engineered 27 game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime since 2011. Stafford completed 70.7 percent of his pass attempts Sunday. He is also undefeated under offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter when he completes at least 70 percent of his pass attempts. Last Sunday was the 10th time it has happened since Cooter was named to his current post.
