Monday Night Football Betting — New Orleans Saints vs Seattle Seahawks

Weather May Be the Big Factor in Saints vs Seahawks Monday Night Football Clash

By Charles Jay

If you’re thinking about Monday Night Football betting at BetAnySports, you would do yourself a favor by considering the weather that the Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints are going to experience.

It was very bad up in the Pacific Northwest yesterday, and the forecast is calling for conditions that may not be quite as bad, but will offer winds that could get themselves up to 20 miles per hour, with rain.

The contest will kick off at 8:15 PM ET at Lumen Field, and of course, the ‘Hawks will be going without Russell Wilson once again. Geno Smith, who started for two years with the New York Jets but has been a backup since, will be at the controls, having done a decent job thus far.

The Saints have been outstanding in a few areas, but are lacking in others. What can this “indoor team” do to give itself an advantage under adverse conditions?

Monday Night Football Betting — What’s the Seattle game plan?

Smith has completed 33 of 49 passes and been intercepted once in the two games in which he has played. Against the Rams he had to come in after Russell Wilson suffered his finger injury, and he led the Seahawks on a couple of scoring drives that kept them in the game.

And against Pittsburgh last week, Seattle came back in the second half to force overtime.

What must be kept in mind here is that Smith is a veteran and knows this system. He does not have the improvisational abilities of Wilson, but he may not have to escape a heavy pass rush, because the Saints don’t come with heavy pressure. New Orleans has the second-lowest sack percentage of any defense in the NFL.

Smith hopes to get some help from running back Alex Collins, who topped 100 yards last week against Pittsburgh. Collins is a veteran too, having once been the #1 back in Baltimore, where he got very close to 1000 yards in 2017.

Monday Night Football Betting — What’s the New Orleans game plan?

On defense, the Saints obviously have a capable secondary, but they will have their hands full with Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf, who are among the top duos in the league. A lot will depend on whether Smith can connect in these winds.

New Orleans already runs the ball more frequently than any team in the NFL. In fact, they’re the only team running it more than 50% of the time.

That means they would like Alvin Kamara to play a big role. Well, let’s out it this way – he’ll have to. The Saints are very thin at the receiver spot, missing Tre’Quan Smith and Deonte Harris. They are already without Michael Thomas, the record-holder for most receptions in one season.

Jameis Winston has thus far been able to minimize turnovers; he has thrown just three INT’s. So it’s a more conservative game plan. The flip side is that it is more predictable, especially with jack-of-all-trades Taysom Hill still sidelined with a concussion.

Monday Night Football Betting — Our conclusion

New Orleans’ proclivity to run appears to make them ideal for this kind of situation. But Kamara has averaged 3.9 yards a carry and has only 113 receiving yards. They are 31st out of 32 teams in passing, so they are not a very dangerous offense, except in the red zone, where they have scored TD’s on 13 of 14 trips. And maybe Seattle, which came into this NFL weekend allowing more yardage than anybody, helps them out.

But the Seahawks have the advantage of more balance. And they have at least fought hard behind Smith. They should be able to run enough with Collins, and maybe the weather mitigates their holes on defense… somewhat.

It may be wiser to grab the points here, but we wonder whether the best decision of all may be going with the “under,” since these offensive units might not be expected to make an inordinate number of big plays.
