Want to Bet Against Rodgers Bouncing Back for the Green Bay Packers?
By Charles Jay
As we come into the Monday Night Football game for Week 2, the Green Bay Packers are a team that looks as if they could be on the verge of a crisis. After all, they were beaten by a big margin by the New Orleans Saints last week.
And BetAnySports customers have to be at least a little impressed that the Detroit Lions fought hard all the way to the end against the San Francisco 49ers, even though the game seemed long since over.
The Packers and Lions get together in an NFC North battle that begins at 8:15 PM ET at Lambeau Field.
It was almost a shameful performance for anyone who was expecting something out of Green Bay, as they were drubbed 38-3 by the Saints. Aaron Rodgers was intercepted twice, and there was very little produced on the ground.
For a team that led the league in scoring last season, this was shocking, to say the least. And of course the talk turned to whether Rodgers and his squabbles with Packer management have had a residual effect on this team on the field.
The Lions have a new head coach in the fiery Dan Campbell, and they reflected the personality of their coach in the way they fought back after going down 38-10 against the Niners. They were able to cut that lead to a single possession, but they ran out of time in the 41-33 defeat.

Packers vs. Lions: The Detroit story
Quarterback Jared Goff, who was acquired from the Rams in exchange for Matthew Stafford, kept slinging against San Francisco. He had 338 yards through the air, although he did throw a pick-six. The running backs produced 217 all-purpose yards, and the general consensus is that Campbell fully intends to commit this team to running the football.
There is some bad news in the form of the absence of wide receiver Tyrell Williams (concussion) and the #2 receiver, Kalif Raymond, is listed as questionable. The Lions do not threaten teams down the field, so you’re probably going to see a lot of short passing. A key figure in all that will be TJ Hockenson, who caught eight passes for 97 yards last week.
Defensively, Detroit has a ways to go. Last season they surrendered 32.4 points and 420 yards per game. And they allowed the Niners a passer rating of 136.5, which is a mammoth figure.
Packers vs. Lions: The Green Bay story
Of course, BetAnySports patrons recall that Rodgers wanted out of Green Bay, but they would not trade him. Because he had a contract, he either had to report or lose a lot of money. Finally, he relented.
But it was awful last Sunday. Rodgers was just 15 of 28 for 133 yards. Davante Adams had five catches for 56 yards. There was a lot of embarrassment to go around. Jordan Love came in to perform mop-up duty.
The Packers had 14 first downs and 43 rushing yards. And they gave up 171 yards on the ground to New Orleans.
They also allowed two touchdown catches by New Orleans tight end Juwan Johnson, which doesn’t bode well as they go up against the formidable Hockenson.
Packers vs. Lions: The conclusion
The coordinators from each team have quite a bit of familiarity with each other, because they comes form the same “tree.” Who gets the advantage, then?
Well, it’s probably the Packers, because we’re going to imagine that Rodgers can bounce back and he knows this defensive alignment well. And Aaron Jones should be able to contribute enough on the ground.
Goff is going to have a hard time making big plays, because Green Bay’s defensive scheme is designed to take that away. Oh, and because Goff’s arm isn’t really capable of stretching the field. The Pack has already seen that when he was with the Rams.
And Green Bay obviously has a big advantage as far as the two defensive units are concerned. It won’t be a free pass all the way for Rodgers, because not having left tackle David Bakhtiari is a factor.
But the Lions, who have covered seven of the last eight meetings, will keep coming and keep throwing, and that amounts to a back door possibility. It also amounts to an over-under that we think can be exceeded. OVER
