Celtics Play Hungry Jazz all Banged Up
The fans at Vivint Smart Home Arena will the Boston Celtics and the Utah Jazz when they take their seats on Wednesday. ESPN will televise the content after the 2018 McDonald’s Boys High School All-American Game. Tip-off is set for 9:30 pm EST.
Oddsmakers opened the Jazz as -6.5-point favorites versus the Celtics, while the game’s total opened at 195.5. The Jazz are now 8.5-point favorites while the total has dropped to 194.5.
Injuries to main components to their lineup are piling up for Boston. The injury bug is throwing a monkey wrench in the Celtics plans. They have to make up ground against Toronto in the race for the Eastern Conference’s top seed.
Since the start of March the Celtics have lost Kyrie Irving, Marcus Smart and Daniel Theis to serious injuries. Theis is done for the year. Irving and Smart won’t be back in the lineup until the playoffs.
Marcus Morris could also be sidelined against Utah. He sprained his ankle in Monday’s 102-94 win over Phoenix. It is a blow to the team’s offense after Morris posted three straight 20-point games. He was a key cog during Boston’s current four-game winning streak.
Jayson Tatum’s recent play has become even more invaluable. The rookie has developed as a consistent offensive threat. It was needed with the absence of so many regulars. Tatum is averaging 16.2 points on 50 percent shooting and 6.1 rebounds in March.
Tatum has had three 20-point outings in the last five games. He has shot 55 percent or better from the floor four times in that span.
Jazz Try to Hang on in Jam-Packed Western Conference
The Jazz are getting some solid production out of their own rookie, Donovan Mitchell. Utah is trying to position itself for a strong finish. This is in part because Mitchell continues to devolvop into a go-to scorer. They had counted on this when they lost Gordon Hayward to Boston in free-agency.
Mitchell is averaging 23.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists in March. His ability to generate offense late in games has helped Utah post 11 wins in its last 13 games.
The Jazz is a slow starting team and has to correct that down the stretch. The Jazz averaged just 19.5 points in the first quarter in each of their last two games. It led to them digging out of holes against both Golden State and San Antonio.
Utah succeeded in pulling away from the Warriors in the 2nd half of a 110-91 win on Sunday. The slow start cost them in a 124-120 overtime loss to the Spurs on Friday.
Utah is looking to complete the season sweep over Boston. The Jazz beat the Celtics 107-95 on December 15th.
Ricky Rubio led the way for Utah with 22 points on 10-of-15 shooting. He also had seven rebounds and five assists. The Jazz shot 52 percent from 3-point range in the win.
