Iron Bowl Determines Who Plays UGA for SEC Title
The fans at Jordan-Hare Stadium will see The Iron Bowl, between the #1 Alabama Crimson Tide and the 6th-ranked Auburn Tigers when they take their seats on Saturday. The Iron Bowl features a winner-take-all matchup for the SEC West Division.
The winner earns the right to play Georgia in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 2 in Atlanta.
Oddsmakers have Alabama as a 6-point favorite. The total is at 47.5.
The winner of the Iron Bowl has played for the national championship in seven of the past eight years. Alabama-Auburn was already one of the top rivalries in college football. The recent history has pushed it into another level altogether. Not many rivalries can boast this type of history.
Alabama has a 45-35-1 lead in the series and has won seven of the past nine matchups.
Auburn used the infamous Kick Six game to defeat Alabama in 2013. It ended the Crimson Tide’s chance at three straight national championships. The Tigers defeated Missouri in the SEC Championship Game. Auburn then came a few seconds away from claiming the national championship in a tough loss to Florida State.
Auburn Used to Playing #1 Teams
Playing the top team in the country is nothing new for Auburn. The Tigers welcomed then-No. 1 Georgia into Jordan-Hare Stadium just two weeks ago. The Tigers hammered the Bulldogs 40-17. In reality the game that wasn’t that close.
Running back Kerryon Johnson leads the SEC with 1,172 yards rushing and 16 rushing touchdowns. Auburn ranks No. 4 in the SEC in rushing yards per game. The War Eagles have almost always had a strong running game under Gus Malzahn. Despite running the spread offense, he believes teams must be physical in the run game.
Quarterback Jarrett Stidham has given the Tigers a downfield passing game they haven’t had in a few years. Stidham has thrown for 2,445 yards with 16 touchdowns. The transfer only has four interceptions. He leads the SEC in completion percentage (67.8).
Auburn has been well over 200 yards rushing in seven of its last eight games. They only had 189-yard effort in the loss to LSU. The Tigers have been over 300 yards four times.
More of the Same from the Crimson Tide
Alabama has the No. 2 rush defense in the country, limiting teams to 87.4 yards per game.
The Tide loves to run as well. Alabama leads the SEC in rushing yards with 270.3 per game. They also lead in yards per carry at 6.03. Then throw in 35 rushing touchdowns.
Alabama All-American safety Minkah Fitzpatrick sat out last week’s game against Mercer. He has a lingering hamstring issue. He was expected to practice through the week. Starting guard Ross Pierschbacher has a bum ankle and hadn’t been cleared as of Monday but was considered day-to-day.
