MLB and NHL Betting Lines: 7 Checks Before You Bet

THE MATCHUP GETS YOUR ATTENTION. THE PRICE DECIDES THE BET. A strong team can still be a poor wager at the wrong number. A competitive underdog can still be overpriced. For MLB and NHL bettors, the useful question is whether the available odds justify the risk—not simply which team looks better.

This SportsDoc guide walks through moneylines, run lines, puck lines, totals and the final checks that belong on every betting worksheet. All odds below are hypothetical teaching examples, not current sportsbook quotes or game recommendations.

1. Start with the break-even price

American odds tell you the payout and the win rate required to break even on a simple win-or-lose bet. At negative odds, divide the absolute odds by that number plus 100. At positive odds, divide 100 by the odds plus 100. These calculations do not estimate a team’s true chance of winning.

Illustrative oddsProfit on a $100 stakeBreak-even win rate
-105$95.2451.22%
-110$90.9152.38%
-120$83.3354.55%
+120$120.0045.45%
+150$150.0040.00%

Analyst edge: If your evidence does not support a probability above the break-even requirement, the price has not established an edge. These percentages include the quoted price; they are not a no-vig market forecast. Pushes and void bets require separate treatment.

2. Compare the same market across books

A hypothetical -105 price offers a larger profit than -110 for the same stake on the same selection. But confirm that you are comparing identical markets: full game versus regulation, the same total, and the same listed-pitcher or settlement conditions. An appealing number on a different market is not a like-for-like improvement.

3. MLB: separate the moneyline from the run line

A moneyline asks you to select the winner under the book’s settlement rules. A -1.5 run line asks the selected team to win by at least two runs; +1.5 can cover a one-run loss. Those are different outcomes. A favorite winning a close game can cash its moneyline and lose its -1.5 run-line bet.

  • Confirm the starting pitchers and whether a pitching change affects the wager.
  • Review bullpen workload and confirmed batting orders.
  • Check weather, postponement risk and the sportsbook’s shortened-game rules.
  • Price the run line on its own merits rather than treating it as a cheaper moneyline.

4. NHL: check the goalie and the settlement window

Starting goaltenders, defensive absences and special teams can change the matchup. Verify whether the market includes overtime and a shootout or ends after regulation. Read how a shootout is treated for puck lines and totals at the specific sportsbook.

Analyst edge: A -1.5 puck line needs a two-goal margin. Empty-net situations can affect that margin late, but they do not make a favorite’s puck line automatically valuable. Evaluate the price, expected game state and settlement terms together.

5. Totals require more than a recent scoring streak

For baseball, consider pitchers, lineups, bullpen availability and conditions. For hockey, consider confirmed goalies, scoring personnel and special teams. Recent high-scoring or low-scoring results describe what happened; by themselves they do not establish the probability of the next total going Over or Under.

6. Build an availability watch

SportCheck before bettingWhy it matters
MLBOfficial probable pitchers and confirmed lineupChanges expected run production and pitching exposure
MLBRecent bullpen workloadAffects late-inning options
NHLConfirmed starting goalieCan change the side and total evaluation
NHLForward, defense and power-play availabilityChanges scoring depth and defensive matchups

Use MLB’s probable-pitcher board, official team lineup announcements and NHL’s official news and team updates. An expected starter is not a confirmed starter. Recheck close to game time.

7. Set the stake before the emotion takes over

Choose a fixed wagering budget and a stake you can afford to lose. Avoid increasing stakes to recover a loss. Several bets on the same team or game can share the same underlying risk, even when they appear in different markets. Passing is a valid decision when the evidence or price is weak.
