On Tuesday the free MLB Play is on the New York Yankees. Game 909 at 8:05 eastern. What’s a Mets fan like me doing here? Taking the Yankees down 0-2 in the A.L.C.S. Shouldn’t I smell blood in the water? No Jeter, distracted Manager due the passing of his father. A vaunted lineup that cant get out of their own way and now facing arguably the most difficult big game pitcher in Baseball with plenty of experience. I should be thrilled the cross town rival could be down 0-3 and in a big hole. Lets not get ahead of ourselves here. I don’t think the Yankees will win the series as teams down 0-2 in this round have lost all 10 times in the series, in this round under the circumstances. I do however think the Yankees can get this one. Here we go. When trailing a best-of-7 MLB playoff series 2-games-nil, the New York Yankees have an overall series record of 4-4, an overall Game 3 record of 5-3 with an active three-Game 3 winning streak. For technical purposes we note that home teams off a road win and scored 4 or less in a game with a total of 8 or less have lost the only 4 times they have played vs an opponent off a home favored loss and scored 2 or less with 4 or less hits. Three of those losses were as a favorite. The Yankees have won 2 of 3 times this season as a road dog from +150 to +175 and have won 4 of 7 here this season. Ok now lets tackle this Pitching situation. Verlander is on the mound tonight. Are you scared? Will you just lean to the Tigers for this reason alone? No. Verlander is coming off perhaps his best outing of the season in a 9 inning complete game shutout and has a 0.39 era in his last 3 starts. I believe he will give up some runs here tonight. His last start was the first time he struck out 10 or more guys in consecutive games this season. In fact he is 1-4 this year off a game where he struck out 10 or more with the lone win his last start vs Oakland. He will be hard pressed to duplicate that effort and this game with a 2-0 lead is not nearly as intense as his last start. He has pitched well vs the Yankees. However in 2 starts at home vs them this season he has allowed 7 runs in 14 innings and allowed 9 hits in both starts. So we know the Yankees can get to him. The Day off to clear their heads can only help a Yankees team that was playing an unprecedented 5 straight playoff games without a day off in between. Some thing they will surely complain about and something that is unlikely to happen again. Particularly a Game one the day after a game 5 first rounder. Now to P. Hughes. In his last start here Hughes finally ran into some tough luck allowing 4 runs in 4 innings. Prior to that though he had pitched fantastic here and since 2009 he has allowed just 5 runs in 26 innings here. The Yankees are 8-3 with him on the mound when playing off a loss and the Yankees are 13-3 this season with a day off. In Hughes 2nd to last start here he went 9 innings and allowed just 1 run on 4 hits. Check the Date. It was June 3rd. He beat Verlander that day 5-1.
