Dodgers Host Giants for 2020 MLB Opening Night

Los Angeles Dodgers

Kershaw Put on DL Before Opener for Dodgers

We had to wait an extra four months this year, but the 2020 MLB regular season has finally arrived. On Thursday, we’ll see the LA Dodgers host the San Francisco Giants in the second part of the Opening Night’s double header.

A few hours prior to his scheduled Opening Day start Thursday night, Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw was placed on the 10-day injured list with back stiffness. Righty Dustin May was recalled from the alternate site and will start the season opener against the Giants instead.

TIME: 10:10 p.m. ET. TV: ESPN; LINE: Dodgers -255; Total: 9.5 Under -115

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Johnny Cueto (2019: 1-2, 5.06 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Dustin May (2019: 2-3, 3.64 ERA)

Two Very Different Teams

The Dodgers are -300 favorites on the moneyline against the +250 Giants. The offseason additions of right fielder Mookie Betts and pitcher David Price were supposed to help the Dodgers get over the hump after making it to the World Series in two of the last three seasons; however, they didn’t foresee the absence of Price, who has opted-out of the season.

Despite his absence, the Dodgers are still +375 co-favorites on the futures market. Not much is expected from the Giants this season, and that’s reflected in their odds. With +15000 futures odds to win the title, they’re long shots and are in the midst of a rebuild.

Some improvements are already apparent under Giants’ President of Baseball Operations, Farhan Zaidi, including four additional wins last year than the year before. San Francisco will be without the services of catcher Buster Posey, who has opted out of the season as a health precaution.

This, That, and a Dart Throw

The 32 year old Kershaw has spent time on the injured list each of the past four seasons. Those trips included back trouble each year from 2016-18. He also had biceps trouble in 2018 and a shoulder problem in 2019. Kershaw has averaged 166 innings the last four seasons. That is a huge drop after averaging 225 2/3 innings the previous five seasons.

Cueto missed much of last season because of Tommy John surgery. He did come back and tossed 16 innings across four starts in September. The 34-year-old is making his fifth Opening Day start. He made his first four with Cincinnati from 2012-15. Cueto is 7-9 with a 3.53 ERA in 20 career starts against the Dodgers. He is 4-5, 2.36 in 10 outings at Dodger Stadium.

The Dart Throw: Dodgers 5, Nationals 3
