Dallas Cowboys Making a Move in Pitiful NFC East
The Dallas Cowboys made this Thanksgiving matchup with the team from Washington formerly known as the Redskins look a lot more interesting with their win on Sunday over the Minnesota Vikings.
Andy Dalton returned from a concussion, and some time on the COVID-19 list, to look like the Andy Dalton of old. The man who led Cincinnati to playoff games back in the day. He led a thrilling last-minute comeback as Dallas edged the Vikings on the road, 31-28. They look to avenge a 25-3 loss in Washington earlier this season.
Washington has gone 1-2 since that game. They have lost to the Giants at home and the Lions on the road. They then had the comeback win at home to beat Cincinnati (and end Joe Burrow’s season on a gruesome sack) last weekend.

Why Washington Will Win
Washington is a defense-first team. They are now getting good enough play from Alex Smith to pose a danger in this dreadful NFC East. Smith threw for 166 yards with a touchdown pass and a pick against the Bengals. Terry McLaurin was his top target on the day. He had five catches for 84 yards. Antonio Gibson carried the ball 16 times for 94 yards and a score.
Washington may have the best defensive line in the NFL. They are led by rookie Chase Young. This is a unit that causes havoc week in and week out. The only reason why Washington has seven losses is that their offense is not strong.
Why the Cowboys Will Win
Andy Dalton threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns in the comeback win. He also had an interception. Having that productivity in the passing game helped open things up for the running game. Ezekiel Elliott showed a new level of urgency in running for 103 yards on 21 carries.
Troy Pollard ran for a 42-yard touchdown as well, while picking up 60 yards on the ground. Amari Cooper got back into the offense and was productive. He caught six balls for 81 yards. CeeDee Lamb had a highlight-reel touchdown catch in the win.
The defense remains an issue, of course. Kirk Cousins threw for three touchdowns in the Vikings’ win. The Dallas defense gave up a lot in the second half. Washington will have Alex Smith running the offense this week. He’s looked terrific in his return, but he’s not very mobile, and Dallas does have a decent pass rush.
The Final Word
I see this turning into a bit of a track meet. One that see the offenses move some in the first half and open it up in the second. Both teams should be able to find holes in the opposing defenses. Both teams can also rush the passer, which could lead to multiple interceptions by both quarterbacks.
This will be one of those Thanksgiving games in which the last team with the ball wins, and after seeing Dallas pull off the win over the Vikings, I’m impressed with their ball movement. I’m more likely to spend on the “over” here, but I also like Dallas to eke this win out at home.
