Cubs and Nationals Meet in First of Four in Series

The Chicago Cubs and the Washington Nationals open a four game series on Monday when they battle at Nationals Park. The game will be televised regionally on MLB Network. First pitch should be around 7:05 EST.

This early season series last year, played in May, turned the seasons around for both these teams. The Cubs walked Nationals prima donna, Bryce Harper 13 times. It got in Harpers’ feeble mind. As a result the Cubs went on to win the World Series and Harper tailed off the rest of the season. The crybabby hit just .243 with 24 homers after he hit .330 with 42 creatures in 2015.

The Cubs will pin their hopes on the pitching of right hander Eddie Butler in this game. Butler has a 3-2 record and a 4.19 ERA this season. Butler is excited about this start. It is only four hours from his childhood home in the Tidewater region of Virginia. He played in college at Radford as well. It is a member of the Big South Conference based in southwest Virginia.

Gio Gonzalez will start for the Nationals. Left hander Gonzalez is 7-1 with a 2.96 ERA so far this season. Gonzalez is 3-2 with a 3.93 ERA in nine career starts against the Cubs. Last year he was 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA in two starts against Chicago. Cubs hitters are hitting only 20-for-97 (.206) against Gonzalez. That includes outfielder Jason Heyward (8-for-37, .216), who just went on the disabled list. Anthony Rizzo, a lefthander, is just 2-for-20 against Gonzalez. Rizzo has been batting leadoff for the Cubs lately. That could change with Gonzalez on the mound.

Oddsmakers opened the Nationals as -145-moneyline favorites versus the Cubs, while the game’s total opened at 9.5. The Nationals are now -150-moneyline favorites and the total is at 10.
