Cubs go to St. Louis for a Four Game Set

St. Louis Cardinals

Cubs Can Clinch NL Central Winning Two Against St. Louis

The Chicago Cubs and St. Louis Cardinals are set to open a four game series on Monday when they meet at New Busch Stadium. The Cubs are on the verge of taking the first step toward defending their World Series championship, winning a division title.

Oddsmakers opened the Cardinals as -123-moneyline favorites versus the Cubs, while the game’s total opened at 8.5. The line now shows St. Louis as a -143-moneyline favorite. The total has dropped to 8.

The Cubs magic number is two. This is surprising considering this: The Cubs were 43-45 and 5 1/2 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers at the All-Star break. They have been red-hot adn  are 44-23 since the break. They have been in sole possession of first place since beating the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 13.

Jon Lester will be the starting pitcher for the Cubs on this day. Left hander Lester is 11-8 this season with a 4.56 ERA.

The Cubs are 10-2 in their past 12 games. Three of those wins occurred at Wrigley Field against St. Louis.

St. Louis On Verge of Missing Postseason

It’ll be Luke Weaver toeing the rubber for the Cardinals in this contest. The Right handed Weaver is 7-1 with a 2.05 ERA so far this season.

St. Louis is on the verge of being eliminated from the division race. They still alive in the wild-card chase. The Cardinals are 2 1/2 games behind the Colorado Rockies (84-72) for the second NL wild card.

The Cardinals rebounded from getting swept by winning four consecutive games. They were outscored 15-7 in losing the final two games of their three-game series at Pittsburgh this weekend.

The Cardinals also need some better production at the plate. Matt Carpenter homered Sunday, but the offense went 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position in the two losses to Pittsburgh.
