College Football Odds & Preview — LSU Tigers vs. Florida State Seminoles

Florida State Seminoles Vs Lsu Tigers College Football

Brian Kelly Takes Over the LSU Tigers College Football Program Against the FSU Seminoles

By Charles Jay

The Florida State Seminoles and the LSU Tigers take the field in the 2022 AllState Louisiana Kickoff Game. For the Florida State Seminoles, it’s now five years without a bowl appearance, and that’s not what people have been used to from this proud program. And with Mike Norvell going into his third season, BetAnySports patrons might be wondering if he is ready to change any of that.

The LSU Tigers hope they are entering a new and successful era behind Brian Kelly, who went 54-9 in his last five years at Notre Dame. He’s making enough money with his long-term deal; he had better p[roduce some results.

LSU plays in state as they take on the Seminoles at the Superdome in New Orleans at 7:30 PM ET on Monday.

The Bayou Bengals, of course, won the national title three seasons ago with Heisman Trophy recipient Joe Burrow at quarterback. Then things kind of went sideways. Last year they went 6-7 and were beaten by Kansas State in the Texas Bowl, as they had to play, in effect, without a signal-caller. Ed Orgeron had been fired, and then they opened up the pocketbook for Kelly.

Florida State was 5-7 last year, and after going toe-to-toe with Kelly’s Notre Dame team in losing an overtime thriller in the season opener, they turned around and lost to FCS entry Jacksonville State. While LSU hasn’t played yet for Kelly, FSU won their opener in an easy one against Duquesne.

College Football Odds & Preview — About the Florida State Seminoles

FSU began its season with a 47-7 win over FCS member Duquesne, which was about as competitive as the score indicated. The ‘Noles held the Dukes to just 164 yards, and rolled up 406 yards on the ground alone. Of course, that’s like an exhibition, but a live scrimmage might give them a bit of an edge in sharpness.

QB Jordan Travis had 207 passing yards last week, but people were probably more impressed by his last six games in the 2021 season, as he threw nine TD passes with just one interception. He is also nimble and elusive.

Alex Atkins is on board as the new defensive coordinator. Jammie Robinson is one of the ACC’s standouts at safety. Robert Cooper and Fabian Lovett might have enough to stuff a lot of runs on the defensive line. Defensive end Jared Verse, a star at FCS Albany, is a pass rush threat.

College Football Odds & Preview — About the LSU Tigers

There is a quarterback competition here, and by all indications, it’s not yet over. Kelly is likely to use both Jayden Daniels, a transfer from Arizona State, and soph Garrett Nussmeier. And that may continue for a couple of weeks. Daniels is the guy with the starting experience. And he moves better. Myles Brennan, who might have been in this competition, has decided to quit football.

Whoever the QB is, he’ll have a brilliant wide receiver to throw to. Keyshon Boutte is one of the two or three best in the nation, and he is capable of big plays, having once rung up 308 yards in a single game.

The defensive coordinator is new (Matt House), and there are a lot of transfers who have come in. Kelly has rebuilt a secondary that was highly questionable last season. And we can’t expect anything but improvement. LSU will have BJ Ojulari and Ali Gaye rushing from the edge, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better duo in the country.

College Football Odds & Preview — Our conclusion

Florida State’s offensive, believe it or not, has scored points on 39 consecutive red zone trips. But LSU’s defensive ends may have the quickness to contain Travis to some extent.

Personally, I’m not crazy about these situations where quarterbacks have a “competition,” even though one would seem the more qualified. Neither one gets enough snaps in camp. LSU’s offense may struggle early as a result.

The feeling here is that the defenses may be a bit ahead of the offenses right now. So we’d lean UNDER the total of 50.5 points.
