The Chanticleers Face the Black Knights in College Football Week One Action
By Charles Jay
The Black Knights of Army open their College Football season in Week One against the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. The team are hopeful that they can build on a successful 2021 campaign. As usual, there is a revolving door of players, but the system is the “constant.”
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers have recently become, at the very least, one of the powers of those teams that are not in the “Power 5.”
These teams meet for the first time ever at Brooks Stadium in Conway, SC with a game time of 7 PM ET.

About the Army Black Knights
Jeff Monken’s team finished 9-4 last season, beating Missouri of the SEC in the Armed Forces Bowl. Of course, they are running a variation of the triple option, so it is “system first.” And to affect that, there are two quarterbacks he can turn to – Cade Ballard and Tyhier Tyler, who ran for 486 yards last season.
But the most damage is likely to be done by running back Tyrell Robinson, who averaged 8.5 yards per carry. Last year the Cadets were second in the nation in rushing, and they had better be able to do that, since they aren’t likely to have any passing attack to speak of.
Army can defend the run as well, and a big part of that is linebacker Andre Carter II. Carter is a rarity, in that he has attained All-America honors at the academy, making the second team in 2021.
About the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
CCU (11-2 in 2021) lost only to Appalachian State and Georgia State last year. In 2020 they reached the top ten, losing only to Liberty in a bowl game. What was started by billionaire coach Joe Moglia (ex-CEO of Ameritrade) has been taken to an even higher level by Jamey Chadwell, who’s in his fifth year on the job.
The top three receivers in this program have departed, and this is not necessarily a football factory. However, that does not mean the well has run dry. Coastal has a highly proficient ground attack, led by Braydon Bennett, who averaged 8.6 yards a pop, and he combines with Reese White (7.2 ypc) to form a dynamite backfield.
On top of that, the Chanticleers have a real quarterback in Grayson McCall, who registered the highest efficiency rating in the history of FBS competition on his way to earning Sun Belt offensive player of the year honors. The ratio of TD passes to interceptions was sensational (27-3).
Our conclusion
Whatever you may think about Coastal Carolina’s chances in the Sun Belt this year, the fact remains that they have the more balanced offense in this matchup, particularly if you have faith in McCall. It is true that Army can get their run game going, though, and CCU is not one of those stop units that shuts down the run. And they have just three starters coming back. We’re leaning in the direction of the “over” in this one.
