Kansas and Coastal Carolina Look for More
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers will be visiting the Kansas Jayhawks on Saturday night. In today’s article, we will be looking at two teams who have suffered from mediocrity, in a matchup that will lay the foundation for the rest of 2019.
The first week of college football is in the books. Teams were subject to upsets, surprises and big statements with all the games played. Many teams’ season aspirations were ruined in week one, but some were just beginning to step into new heights.
Can Miles turn the Jayhawks around?
This matchup is highlighted by the passing game for both of these teams. In week one, we saw Coastal Carolina take on the Eastern Michigan Eagles. Coastal Carolina finished the game with over 300 yards passing while racking up less than 100 yards rushing.
Coastal Carolina ultimately fell short 30-23, and this result was mostly due to turnovers. The Chanticleers quarterback, Fred Payton, threw four interceptions over the course of the game. These turnovers cost them the victory against EMU, and Coastal Carolina left that game with a bitter taste in its mouth.
The Jayhawks started their season in a much different fashion. In the offseason, Kansas went out and got themselves a big-name head coach, as former LSU head man Les Miles took over the Jayhawks.
The Jayhawks program has not had a winning team since 2008 and have only won a total of seven games in the last five seasons. It has been a nightmare stretch for Kansas, and Miles, with his experience, should be a coach that can come in and turn the trajectory of the program around.
Miles has national championship experience as well as big-time experience coaching in the SEC for over 10 years. Kansas is hoping that this will serve as a change of culture in the locker room.
The Jayhawks opened their season against the Indiana State Sycamores. Kansas was leading in this game until the fourth quarter when Indiana State regained the lead 17-16 with about four minutes left on the clock. Quarterback Carter Stanley managed to lead his team on an eight-play, 75-yard drive to put the Jayhawks up 24-17 after the two-point conversion.
Stanley finished the game 20-29 with 241 yards passing and two touchdowns. He played a solid game as the starter and did not make a lot of mistakes. A comeback win in the fourth quarter was enough to get college football fans excited about Miles’ coaching debut.
This, That And A College Football Dart Throw
In terms of the betting line, VietBet has the Jayhawks favored at home in this game at -7 with the moneyline having Kansas at -265.
Kansas gets the heavy nod here at home thanks to their strong week one performance. Miles seems to have instituted a culture change for the Jayhawks, and Stanley looked solid in the season opener.
Coastal Carolina won’t roll over in this game, but judging by their turnover problem last week against Eastern Michigan, I would expect more turnover trouble this week on the road against a tougher opponent.
I think the Jayhawks are poised to get their first winning season in over a decade under Miles. If at least seven wins are the goal, this non-conference home game is an absolute must-win for Kansas.
The Dart Throw
Take Kansas at -8 to win this home matchup. The final score of this game will be 30-20 with the Jayhawks controlling the ball and managing time of possession the whole game.
