Christmas Day NFL Betting — Mayfield is cleared
Baker Mayfield has been cleared out of the COVID protocol, as has his backup, Case Keenum. How much of a break that is for the Browns is another question entirely.
Mayfield has not been a hot quarterback. In fact, he’s been just the opposite. Over the last four games, he has completed just 55% of his passes for 5.7 yards an attempt. Jarvis Landry is also cleared, but the Browns have fewer completions to wide receivers than any other team. It’s a good thing they are pretty good at throwing screen passes; Cleveland has averaged 8.1 yards per attempt on throws behind the line of scrimmage.
Kareem Hunt, part of the dynamite Browns backfield, won’t be available, and as far as the analytical rankings at Pro Football Focus (PFF) are concerned, he is Cleveland’s top receiving back, by far.
But Nick Chubb is present and accounted for, and you obviously know him as one of the NFL’s premier backs. And interestingly enough, D’Ernest Johnson has the top “run” grade among all the running backs PFF has listed.
Christmas Day NFL Betting — Here are the numbers…
In the odds on this game, as they are posted at BetAnySports, the Packers are the favorites:
Green Bay Packers -7.5
Cleveland Browns +7.5
Over 46.5 points -110
Under 46.5 points -110
Christmas Day NFL Betting — Green Bay “D” faltering a bit
Four of the six highest yardage totals Green Bay has yielded have come in the last four games. So there’s something to be said about that, as the Packers had held six opponents prior to that to less than 350 yards. So it is no coincidence that they have allowed 122 points on those games.
And you would not exactly call Tyler Huntley or Justin Fields juggernaut-type quarterbacks.
So can Cleveland exploit any of this? That’s going to be tough, since they have scored more than 17 points only twice in the last nine games. Clearly what they would like to do is keep the football on the ground and control matters. But there is a shuffled offensive line, with three different absences, including left tackle Jedrick Wills and center JC Tretter.
Christmas Day NFL Betting — Our conclusion
Since their opening-game no-show against the Saints, the Packers have covered eleven out of 13 games. Aaron Rodgers has probably been keeping a list of the media members who threw him under the bus during his vaccine debacle, just in case he gets to the Super Bowl. He is gunning for yet another MVP award, and over the last four games, he has thrown 13 touchdown passes without an interception.
Over the last eight games, only New England and Baltimore have scored more than 16 points against the Browns. So they’re doing a good job – better than the Packers lately.
Green Bay had played seven straight games under the total before going through this substandard four-game defensive run where all the games have gone over. The Pack has not always been reliable in stopping the run, so that gives the Browns a chance to come in under this number.
