Newcomb Looks to Get Back on Track for Braves
The San Diego Padres and the Atlanta Braves will meet in game 3 of their 4 game series on Saturday when they battle at SunTrust Park.
TV: 5:10 p.m. EST, FS San Diego, FS South (Stlanta)
Pitching Matchup: Padres RH Jordan Lyles (2-3, 4.83 era) vs. Braves LH Sean Newcomb (7-2, 2.92).
Both Newcomb and Lyles are former first-round draft choices.
Sean Newcomb hadn’t lost since his opening start of the season until falling to the Dodgers last Sunday. It ended a six-game winning streak.
The Padres ended an eight-game losing streak in Atlanta on Friday night. They beat the National League East-leading Braves 7-3. It was their 12th victory in the past 17 games.
Oddsmakers opened the Braves as -185-moneyline favorites versus the Padres, while the game’s total opened at 8.5. The line has held pretty steady.
Braves are 3-1 on Current Homestand
Newcomb held the Padres to three singles in six scoreless innings at San Diego on June 5. It was in a 14-1 rout that was the only victory for the Braves in that three-game series.
Newcomb’s performance was a near duplicate of his first major league victory last June in San Diego. The win gave him a 1.31 ERA during a seven-start stretch.
The 24-year-old gave up two first-pitch home runs against the
Dodgers in his last starts. One was a three-run shot in the third inning. He allowed five runs in 5 1/3 innings of a 7-2 loss.
Freddie Freeman extended his hitting streak to nine games with a fifth-inning homer. It put
Atlanta ahead 3-2. Freeman finished 1-for-3 with a walk to exit friday with a .342 batting average and 15 homers. That gives him six in his past nine games.
It was enough as the Braves fell to 3-1 on their homestand and 4-2 in their last 6.
Padres Are Playing at the Top of Their Game
Padres starter Jordan Lyles gave up eight runs in 4 1/3 innings as the Braves made things easy for Newcomb in San Diego. Tthe 27-year-old right-hander took another loss in his most recent start.
Lyles again allowed 11 hits with four runs in six innings against the Cardinals in St. Louis. The Cardinals had just three swings and misses on 102 pitches.
Lyles’ rough stretch followed some impressive work in May. He was moved into the rotation from the bullpen. He took a perfect game into the eighth inning against the Colorado Rockies in his second start. Lyles ended up allowing a hit and a walk while striking out 10 in 7 1/3 innings.
Lyles has a 6.35 ERA in four games (three starts) against the Braves. The loss in San Diego last week his only decision.
Freddy Galvis tormented the Braves during his time with Phillies.
The Padres shortstop comes into saturday’s contest after collecting five hits in friday’s 9-3 victory.
Galvis blasted a three-run homer in the seventh inning friday. That raised his career average against the braves to .284 with five homers and 30 rbis in 80 career games.
