Boxing Betting Picks — Canelo Alvarez vs Dmitry Bivol: An Obstacle For Alvarez

Canelo Alvarez Vs Dmitry Bivol

Canelo Alvarez vs Dmitry Bivol Should be Entertaining

By Charles Jay

If we’ve just seen Cinco de Mayo, then you know a Canelo Alvarez fight couldn’t be far behind.

And I guess you’ve got to hand it to the guy for his relentless pursuit of title belts. In his latest effort, he’ll be going after The WBA “super” light heavyweight title against Dmitry Bivol in what some observers believe could be his toughest fight to date.

Alvarez has already captured a belt at 175 pounds, as most BetOnline customers are aware. In November 2019, he knocked out Sergey Kovalev in eleven rounds, but truth be told, he had a hard time of it up until then. That is his only experience in this weight class.

On the other hand, Bivol, who is 190 with 11 KO’s, has been a light heavyweight throughout his entire professional career. And he has been performing at a world-class level almost from the outset.

People will carry a four inch height advantage, as well as a reputation for being an outstanding technical boxer.

Boxing Betting Picks — About Canelo Alvarez

He did not have an extensive amateur career, but as a professional, he has 436 rounds under his belt. He began in 2005, weighing just 139 pounds. And he has gradually moved up the ladder. He unsuccessfully fought Floyd Mayweather for the WBC 154-pound title back in 2013, losing a majority 12-round decision. He sustained a 12-round draw against Gennady Golovkin in September 2017, and he also had a draw very early in his career. Those are the only blemishes on his record.

Alvarez defeated Golovkin on a majority decision in September 2018, and is slated for a third fight with GGG if he is successful here.

Alvarez has been on a campaign to win all the title belts available, and he currently owns the super middleweight championship in all four major sanctioning bodies, having completed that cycle with a technical knockout win in eleven rounds against Caleb Plant last November 6th. His record currently stands at 57-2-1, with 39 knockouts.

Boxing Betting Picks — About Dimitry Bivol

A native of Kirkuk Kyrgyzstan who grew up in Russia and now lives in Indio, CA, Bivol captured the WBA interim light heavyweight title with a 12-round decision over Felix Valera in just his 7th pro bout. He’s only had 19 fights after an extensive 283-fight amateur career, so he has not exactly ripped his way through the entire light heavyweight ranks. But easy victories over Joe Smith Jr and Jean Pascal are an indication that he can be a dominant figure.

Bivol is a great fundamental boxer and very precise with his punches. It’s just that he doesn’t have a lot of heavy artillery when he throws. His last six fights has been 12-round decision victories. So he’s not taking people out very easily. However, he is winning those bouts by an average of 8.6 points per scorecard, which shows you how much control he’s had.

Boxing Betting Picks — What is going to happen

When we look at this fight, there can be no doubt as to what Canelo’s strategy is going to be. He can’t just stand out there on the outside, so he is going to have to be more aggressive and land more punches. For someone giving up a lot of height, his preferable approach will be to get under Bivol’s jab and perhaps land some punches to the body. This would be more difficult if Bivol was a great mover, but don’t expect the champion to get on his bicycle.

Certainly one has to ask the question as to whether Canelo is moving up a little too far, against someone who is absolutely a legitimate light heavyweight champ. After all, he turned down the opportunity the fight this at a catchweight, which allows Bivol to come in as a full light heavy.

On the other hand, you have to wonder whether Bivol, who as we mentioned is a solid fundamental boxer, is good enough to control Alvarez for the full 12 rounds strictly by finessing him. We would argue that no one has had the capability of making him fight three minutes of every round the way Canelo will do. I think it’s the factor of being busier that will ultimately make the difference for Mexico’s finest in this one.

We take a look at what BetOnline has in the way of the  “Method of Victory”  proposition:

Alvarez by Decision or Technical Decision -165
Alvarez by KO, TKO or DQ +225
Bivol by Decision or Technical Decision +575
Bivol by KO, TKO or DQ +1250
Draw or Technical Draw +1800

And the primary option for us is to lay a rather short price with Canelo to win a decision (165).
