Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees- Tuesday, Aug. 4
One of the best rivalries in baseball will be renewed this Tuesday night with Game 1 of a three-game series between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees in a nationally broadcast contest on the MLB Network. BetAnySports opened Boston as a +190 road underdog with New York set as a heavy -205 favorite at home, but the odds have dropped 30 cents in the Red Sox favor to NY -175. The betting odds for the total had been set at 8.5 but are now 9 under (-120)
Boston continues to bring up the rear in the AL East this season after dropping 13 of its last 18 games. The Red Sox did manage to take two of three from Tampa Bay this past weekend at home, but when it comes to playing on the road they are just 20-31 this year. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five games on the road.
Most of the Red Sox’s issues this season have revolved around a pitching staff that is ranked dead last in the American League with a team ERA of 4.52. They have done a much better job at getting runners across the plate with an average of 4.2 runs a game, and over their last eight games this average has ballooned to 6.8. They may need even more than that on Tuesday night with left-hander Henry Owens making his MLB debut after spending most of his summer in Triple A at Pawtucket.
New York remains at the top of the division with a record of 59-45. Following this past weekend’s 2-1 series victory against the Chicago White Sox on the road, they are six games up on both Toronto and Baltimore. New York is 30-17 at home this season and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last six games played at home.
This is another lineup that knows how to knock in runs and after scoring a combined total of 27 in its last three games, New York is now ranked second in the AL with an average of 4.9 runs a game. Its pitching staff has also had some issues with consistency this season and the overall staff ERA of 4.02 is ranked 12th in the AL. Look for Masahiro Tanaka to get the start in Tuesday’s series opener. The right-hander is 7-4 this season with a 3.80 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP through his first 14 starts, but he has now allowed a total of 13 earned runs over his last 20 2/3 innings.
Given the matchup on the mound and the way both of these lineups have been hammering home runs lately, I am going with the OVER as my top pick for Tuesday night on BetAnySport’s 9-run total line.
