BYU Looks to Save Season Against Boise State
Can the BYU Cougars enter the fray against the Boise State Broncos? The 2019 college football season has brought us a number of upsets and an incredible showing of games so far. Every year there seems to be a team from a non-Power 5 conference that makes a name for itself in the national spotlight.
That team this year is the Boise State Broncos. They are currently ranked No. 14 in the country and are undefeated at 6-0 to start this season. The Broncos boast one of the best offenses in the nation and will look to continue their success this week.
They will be traveling on the road to take on the BYU Cougars. BYU is a measly 2-4 on the season but is never an easy place to travel to and come out safe with a win.
Boise State will have its work cut out for itself in this game, and while it is no secret that the Broncos are favored, it still is not a gimme.
Balanced Attack for Boise State
The Broncos’ offensive attack has been balanced and effective against any of the opponents they have played against this season. They average 37 points a game, and both their passing and rushing attacks are equally scary.
Their defense has not yet been as successful. They have been solid for sure but are still giving up nearly 20 points and over 300 yards per game. This is the area where BYU could find some success in its game plan and attack Boise State right up the middle.
The Broncos have struggled to force a lot of turnovers in these games, and likely won’t get a solid amount of pressure in the BYU backfield. This lines up perfectly for the Cougars, as their passing attack has been their strongest feature in all of 2019.
The problem for BYU will also be its defense. If Boise State’s defense has been bad, then BYU’s has been abhorrent, as they allow over 400 yards of total offense to their opponents per game. Their offense has been sound, but the reason they are 2-4 heading into this matchup is that their defense can not string together enough stops for their offense to keep up.
If BYU wants any chance to pull off an upset, it is going to have to rely on its home crowd to go crazy enough to distract the Boise State Broncos and try and force some turnovers and win the turnover battle.
This is all easier said than done, of course, and it will be a monumental task for the Cougars to try and pull off this upset against a Boise State offense that is this good. Still, Lavell Edwards Stadium is no easy place to play, and the Cougars will be hungry to crash Boise State’s party.

This, That and a College Football Dart Throw
As mentioned earlier, our friends over at BetAnySports have Boise State favored on the road in this game. The Broncos open the line at -6.5, which I think would have been much higher had they had been at home.
BetAnySports is recognizing the upset potential in this game, as Boise State has not had to play any tough opponents all season. Their hardest matchup came in week one against Florida State, and that program has been down-trending in recent years since their national championship.
I think the home-field advantage will play a big factor in this game, and I think the Broncos will be shaky on the road in this matchup. I like BYU forcing a lot of turnovers and then controlling the clock and trying to keep that high-powered Boise State offense off of the field.
It’s a risky pick but with a large payout, as I am sensing an upset late Saturday night.
