Two of Top Offenses in Nation Square-Off in Big 12 Matchup
The fans at Amon Carter Stadium will see the 23rd-ranked West Virginia Mountaineers and the 8th-ranked TCU Horned Frogs when they take their seats on Saturday.
Oddsmakers have the Horned Frogs as 12-point favorites. The total is sitting nicely at 67.5 total points. It opened at 73.
TCU and West Virginia were picked to finish in the middle of the pack in the Big 12. Both teams have shown balanced offenses in the usually pass-happy league.
The Horned Frogs and Mountaineers have the top two rushing offenses in the Big 12. They are only separated by just over a yard per game. TCU averages 232.3 yards and West Virginia is getting 231. They rank 25th and 26th in the country.
West Virginia is averaging 594.8 yards per game, and is second in the nation in total offense. TCU averages 497.0 yards per game and is 17th.
TCU is no longer Surprise of the Big 12
In their last action, TCU was a 44-31 winner on the road against Oklahoma State Cowboys. They covered the +9.5-point spread as underdogs, while the combined score (75) was profitable news for OVER bettors.
TCU is second in the conference in total defense. They are the best in the Big 12 at defending against the run. The Mountaineers are one of just two teams in the conference that are allowing fewer than 100 yards per game on the ground.
TCU’s offense will be triggered by quarterback Kenny Hill. He has the sixth-best completion percentage in the nation. He trails only Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield in the Big 12.
Hill is one of two starters in the conference who has yet to pass for more than 1,000 yards. With the league’s top rushing offense he doens’t have to throw a lot. He has been able to play smarter football that has led the team to its perfect start.
West Virginia Looks to Keep Offense in High Gear Against Tough Defense
West Virginia was a 56-34 winner in their most recent outing on the road against Kansas Jayhawks. They failed to cover the -24.5-point spread as favorites, while the total score (90) made winners of OVER bettors.
Quarterback Will Grier, a transfer from Florida, leads the Mountaineers’ prolific attack. He has found the mark on 94 of 144 passes through four games. That has amounted for 1,374 yards and 13 touchdowns. He has thrown just three interceptions.
Running back Justin Crawford has the chance to get meaningful yards on every snap. It helps to control the game for West Virginia. Crawford has racked up 451 yards and six touchdowns on just 61 carries. He has gained at least 100 yards in each game this season.
The series between the Horned Frogs and Mountaineers is tied 3-3. All but one meeting has been in the Big 12. TCU leads the series 3-2. West Virginia won last year’s contest 34-10 in Morgantown. It was TCU’s most lopsided loss as a member of the Big 12.
