Rockies Look to Stay Within Striking Distance in NL West
The Houston Astros will visit the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday in the most intriguing pitching matchup of the night. The Astros are on the verge of running away with the AL West. Colorado has to keep playing well to keep up with the streaking Dodgers in the NL. TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, AT&T SportsNet Southwest (Houston), AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain (Colorado). PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Gerrit Cole (10-2, 2.52 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (6-3, 3.72). Odds: The Astros are -145 on the moneyline. The total is sitting at 10.Cole is on Fire for the Astros
With a 2.52 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP, the All-Star Cole has been one of the best pitchers this season. Houston has won seven of his last nine starts overall. He has improved to 10-2 on the season over that span. The veteran righty has been just as good on the road as he has been at home, going 6-1 with a 2.53 ERA in 10 road starts this season. Cole was outstanding in his last start. He allowed one run, three hits and four walks while striking out eight in 5 2/3 innings of a 9-1 victory over Detroit. This was on on July 14, and he reached 10 wins for the fifth time in his six major-league seasons. The 27-year-old’s strikeout total is fifth-best in baseball. He has yielded one earned run or fewer in four of his last five starts. Cole boasts a 0.98 WHIP this season. Nolan Arenado is 5-for-11 with two home runs for the Rockies against Cole. The rest of the active Rockies are 8-for-48 versus Cole. He is 3-1 with a 2.49 ERA in four starts against them. This includes a victory in his only start at Coors Field in 2016 when he permitted two earned runs in six innings. Alex Bregman (.282, 20 home runs, 66 RBIs), the MVP of the All-Star Game, has reached base safely in 25 straight contests. That is the longest active streak in the majors. He is hitting .333 during that stretch. Bregman had a 31-game on-base run earlier this season.Rockies are 15-6 in Tough Stretch of MLB Season
Colorado will send Anderson to the mound Tuesday night. Despite having to overcome the difficulties of pitching at home at Coors Field, the veteran lefty is 6-3 with a 3.72 ERA this season. Anderson is just 2-3 with a 3.94 ERA in his 10 home starts this season. However, it’s worth noting that Anderson has held opponents to two earned runs or less in each of his last four starts dating back to June 29. Tuesday’s game will mark the first of four head-to-head meetings between the Rockies and Astros this season. The Colorado Rockies have played a team with a winning record each game since June 26. They could continue to do so until Aug. 19th. That is a rough stretch. Colorado has started the challenging stretch 15-6. They sit within striking distance of first place in the National League West and an NL wild-card spot. The Astros have the highest road winning percentage in baseball at .694. Their 34 wins away from home are the second-most in the majors to Boston.Recent Form
