The Team Formerly Known as the Redskins Defense Needs to Step Up
Washington’s Week 1 upset came from the Philadelphia Eagles, who were 5.5-point favorites to start the season 1-0. Washington managed to come back in a close contest where both sides combined for just 504 total yards. Washington’s defense forced three turnovers and sacked QB Carson Wentz eight times. Arizona QB Kyler Murray is coming off a big win of his own and will have to be contained today.
Washington was anchored by a stout defense that racked eight sacks. Two of those came from end Ryan Kerrigan. He was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career after his performance. Kerrigan also had a fumble recovery that was crucial. It is astonishing as he played just 22 snaps.
Cardinals Offense Can be Great
The addition of WR DeAndre Hopkins has had an immediate impact on Arizona’s passing game. It ranked No. 15 league-wide in 2019. The four-time Pro Bowler was targeted 16 times and made 14 receptions for 151 yards in his Arizona debut. But it was the rushing game that stole the show. QB Kyler Murray ran for 91 yards, that was far more than any other QB in Week 1.
Arizona’s defense was also firing on all cylinders; S Budda Baker had an incredible game, with 15 total tackles as the Cardinals dismantled QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s offense.
