By Charles Jay

At BetAnySports, here are the Academy Awards betting odds for Best Actor:

Will Smith – King Richard -1200
Benedict Cumberbatch – The Power of the Dog +500
Andrew Garfield – tick, tick… Boom! +1000
Denzel Washington – The Tragedy of Macbeth +4000

Well, if you notice this list you’re going to notice something interesting. Which is that while everyone has been nominated for something before, the two previous Oscar winners are the guys bringing up the rear.

Academy Awards Betting — A first for Will Smith?

Will Smith, as Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams, is a big favorite here. And while it is not a surprise that he is the guy up top. His is a powerful performance, and not the only one that has been recognized with an Oscar nod (Aunjanue Ellis got one for Best Supporting Actress).

The film itself (“King Richard”) is +2000 to win Best Picture. What you always have to take into consideration is that sometimes an actor is going to be paid back, so to speak, for those times when he did not take home the award. Smith has been nominated for Best Actor twice before. And both of those were for real-life people as well. Of course, it was Muhammad Ali in “Ali.” And then there was Chris Gardner, whose actual story is depicted in “The Pursuit of Happyness.”

And so now we’re here with Richard Williams, who was not himself a competitive player but meticulously taught his daughters how to play. At one point he brought them to a tennis academy, but later took them out. He kept them out of junior tournaments at a very early age.

Right now they have 30 Grand Slam singles titles between them.

Academy Awards Betting — The right time for a “dog?”

Benedict Cumberbatch captured a 2014 nomination for “The Imitation Game.” But his bid this year is stronger. That’s because “The Power of the Dog” is one of the more highly decorated films in history coming into the Oscar ceremony, with twelve nominations.

Maybe this sounds pretentious, but there are a certain number of Oscar voters who like it when the foreign actors come over and do the American accent. In Cumberbatch’s case, it’s the voice of someone who is completely resolute about demonstrating he’s a real cowboy, which contrasts with his Yale background. Not that he’s not on a real ranch; he is. But the family sent him east for refinement, we suppose. His character is also in something of a struggle with his sexuality, which provides one of the keys as to how this movie is going to proceed.

I saw this picture, and this nomination is in order. Apparently for him to overtake Smith, he would be relying on the momentum created by the wave around this film.

Academy Awards Betting — Who loves Garfield?

Most people might remember Andrew Garfield from “The Social Network,” but he’s been building a big resume. It includes the likes of “The Amazing Spider Man” (parts one and two), “Hacksaw Ridge,” for which he was recognized with a Best Actor nod. This year has been a big one, as he’s been in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye,” opposite Jessica Chastain (a Best Actress nominee) and “Tick, Tick….Boom” (for which he’s nominated this year). Now “Spider-Man”No Way Home” is in release.

Academy Awards Betting — With Denzel, same ol’ same ol’?

It seems like Denzel Washington is almost an automatic nominee whenever he is in anything of substance. Which is, well, just about always. This is his ninth acting nomination. And he has won twice – for “Glory” in 1990 and “Training Day” in 2002. Joel Coen (of the fabulous Coen brothers) wrote and directed this “Macbeth” film. He also co-produced it with his wife Frances McDormand, a three-time Oscar winner, who played Lady Macbeth.

Academy Awards Betting — No Dice for Dez?

I didn’t see that film, but I did see “Being the Ricardos,” for which Javier Bardem is nominated. Oscar voters know him well, with nods for films not a lot of people saw, like “Before Night Falls” and “Biutiful.” And then, of course, there was his Supporting Actor win for the VERY scary hit man Anton Chigurh in “No Country For Old Men.”

As Desi Arnaz, he’s quite good. And obviously this film was well-liked among those people who had ballots, because Nicole Kidman and JK Simmons were also nominated.

But it looks like if there’s a Will, there’s a way.
