Top Caliber Matchup in 2018 NIT Second Round
The 2018 NIT Second Round will see the 3rd-seeded Stanford Cardinal and the 2nd-seeded Oklahoma State Cowboys meet in on Monday. Gallagher-Iba Arena will host the matchup that tips off at 7 pm EST. ESPNU will televise the game.
Oddsmakers opened the Cowboys as -7.5-point favorites versus the Cardinal, while the game’s total opened at 152.5. The line is not Oklahoma State as an 8-point favorite. The total has risen to 155.
Oklahoma State Defense May be the Key in 2018 NIT
Oklahoma State won its opening round matchup with Florida Gulf Coast on the strength of its defense. The ‘Pokes forced 18 turnovers and held the Eagles to 38.3 percent shooting. The Cowboys won their 2018 NIT opener 80-68.
Jeffrey Carroll had 18 points and 8 rebounds to lead the Cowboys. Mitchell Solomon chipped in 13 points and 9 rebounds. and G Lindy Waters III had 10 points. Oklahoma State got a big boost off the bench from Tavarius Shine. He finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Kendall Smith added 8 rebounds despite 1-of-11 shooting.
The Cowboys had 10 different players with at least a point. They also had 10 different players with at least a rebound. It was one of their most balanced games in recent memory.
Turnovers were a problem as OSU had 14. The Cowboys scored 20 points off turnovers and 26 points in the paint to counteract it.
Stanford Looks to Channel Past Success in 2018 NIT
Stanford was last in the postseason when they won the 2015 NIT title. The Cardinal have won three NIT championships. They won in 1991, 2012 and 2015. Nine NIT appearances has given them a record of 18-5.
The Cardinal won their opener with BYU at Maples Pavilion. The 86-83 win was a nail-biter almost the entire game.
Travis Reid and Michael Humphrey had huge games inside the paint. Reid scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Humphrey had 11 points and 14 boards. The Cardinal out-rebounded the Cougars 33-27.
Stanford had five players score in double figures. They had to nurse a 10-point lead in the last 36 seconds to fend off BYU.
