San Diego State Wary of Dangerous Huskies Team

The fans at Qualcomm Stadium will be treated to a game between the NIU Huskies and the 19th-ranked San Diego State Aztecs when they take their seats on Saturday. The game will be televised by CBS Sports Network and kickoff is set for 10:30 pm EST.

Oddsmakers have the Aztecs as 9-point favorites after opening at 12. The total is at 47.5.

San Diegs State Has One of Top Rushing Offenses in Nation

San Diego State won its last outing, a 28-24 result against the Air Force Falcons on September 23. The Aztecs covered in that game as a -1.5-point favorite, while the 52 combined points took the game OVER the total.

Rashaad Penny’s 53-yard touchdown run was the deciding factor last week. It was his third score of the game. The run helped him earn Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week honors for a fourth consecutive time in 2017. To make it a fifth straight win Penny will have to find new ways to make explosive plays against a stout Northern Illinois defense. Penny is the nation’s No. 2 rusher at 179.0 yards per game.

Huskies Will Depend on Stout Defense

NIU was a 21-17 winner in their most recent outing It was a road upset against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. They covered the +10.5-point spread as underdogs, while the total score (38) made winners of UNDER bettors.

Northern Illinois is coming off a bye week. It followed its 21-17 road win against Nebraska on Sept. 16. The Huskies have proven to be adept at not allowing big-yardage plays through three games. They rank No. 8 in runs of 10 or more yards allowed. UNI’s D has given up just nine. They have surrendered just two rushes of 20-plus yards. They have given up none of 30 or more.

Northern Illinois’ first three opponents, Boston College, Eastern Illinois and Nebraska have averaged 2.96, 1.33 and 2.36 yards per carry against the Huskies.

The Huskies have six interceptions through three games. Cornerback Shawun Lurry proved he can be one of the best cover men in the nation. He intercepted nine passes in 2015. But the distribution of takeaways this year is spread among six players.
