Mountaineers Host TCU in Big 12 Action

West Virginia Mountaineers

Mountaineers Look to Rebound

The TCU Horned Frogs and the West Virginia Mountaineers will both be trying to pick up a win on Monday when they battle at WVU Colliseum. Tip-off is set for 9 pm EST and ESPN2 has the telecast.

Oddsmakers opened the Mountaineers as -6-point favorites versus the Horned Frogs, while the game’s total opened at 161. West Virginia is now an 8-point favorite and the total has dropped to 154.5.

West Virginia was a 88-85 loser in their most recent outing at home against the Oklahoma State Cowboys. They failed to cover the -12.5-point spread as favorites.

The Mountaineers’ defense unraveled during the 88-85 loss. They allowed 16 points over the final 2:50. That must be shored up as they prepare to face the conference’s most efficient offensive team.

That squandered a career-high 33-point performance by Jevon Carter. He is the team’s top offensive player at 17.2 points and 6.7 assists per game. West Virginia aims to get Sagaba Konate (10.5 points a game) and Ahmad (10.7 points) more involved.

TCU Need a Big Road Win Over Mountaineers

Last time out for TCU, they were a 87-71 winner as they battled the Texas Longhorns at home. They covered in the match as a -5.5-point favorite.

The Horned Frogs are an NCAA bubble team backed by solid metrics. They are 24th in RPI, 22nd in Ken Pom and they are probably needing at least eight league wins to nab an at-large bid.

The Horned Frogs have the nation’s No. 5-rated offense according to KenPom. 6-foot-10 forward Vladimir Brodziansky scored 25 points and Kouat Noi sank four 3-pointers on his way to 18 points.

TCU has not beaten a ranked team on the road since the 1997-98 season. Monday expects to encounter an ornery opponent. West Virginia missed its chance to make a jump in the Big 12 standings. Their loss made them fall two games off the pace.

The Horned Frogs beat West Virginia for the first time in 12 tries. That signature victory featured the Mountaineers going nearly 10 minutes without a basket. It was a rare stretch of pesky guarding by the Frogs. Ken Pom rates only 128th defensively.
