For the sake of brevity, we are listing the players who came up at odds of 50-1 or lower. There may be a longshot you like, but we are relatively certain the winner is going to come from this field:
Matthew Stafford, Rams QB +100
Joe Burrow, Bengals QB +220
Cooper Kupp, Rams WR +550
Aaron Donald, Rams DL +1200
Ja’Marr Chase, Bengals WR +1600
Odell Beckham Jr, Rams WR +2200
Joe Mixon, Bengals RB +3300
Von Miller, Rams LB +3300
Tee Higgins, Bengals WR +5000
Evan McPherson, Bengals PK +5000
Jalen Ramsey, Rams CB +5000
Let’s offer a few quick words on each of the candidates for Super Bowl LVI:
Matthew Stafford, Rams quarterback +100
Joe Burrow, Bengals quarterback +220
We list them together because quarterbacks often get preference when it comes to the Super Bowl MVP voting. In 31 of the 55 games to date, the QB has won the award.
Stafford is the favorite because his team is favored. But Burrow is obviously the choice to win it if the Bengals win. He is the guy who has been operating behind a substandard offensive line all season long, and yet he has compiled statistics that absolutely defy that, such as the league-best accuracy figure and the most yards per attempt.
Cooper Kupp, Rams wide receiver +550
Kupp has been targeted more than twice as many times as any other Los Angeles receiver, and almost three times as much as all the running backs combined. And including the playoffs, he’s had 2333 receiving yards. He’s the guy I think would be most responsible if the Rams have something of an offensive explosion.
Aaron Donald, Rams defensive lineman +1200
Only one defensive lineman has ever won the Super Bowl MVP award. But Donald’s reputation obviously precedes him, and if the Rams’ defensive line is available to put unbearable pressure on Burrow, he is likely to get the most credit for it.
Ja’Marr Chase, Bengals wide receiver +1600
Chase, a rookie, is the go-to guy for Burrow, and he had a magical season. But he did go into a bit of a mid-season lull, and Jalen Ramsey has pledged to shadow him throughout this game. He may not get shut down completely, but awe-inspiring numbers don’t seem likely.
Odell Beckham Jr, Rams wide receiver +2200
Beckham’s best shot here is for the Bengals to devote so much attention to Kupp that it presents an unusual amount of opportunity for him. And of course, we know that he is always capable of a big play.
Joe Mixon, Bengals running back +3300
We could see a pathway for him. If Burrow goes extensively to the screen game and is on the other end of those throws, and then if he is a vital component of Cincinnati controlling the ball and killing clock in the second half. Running backs have won the MVP seven times.
Von Miller, Rams linebacker +3300
Miller is a previous winner (Super Bowl 50) and could get some consideration, but only if he did something like he did then, which is to score some sacks, be up Burrow’s ass all day,and maybe force a strip sack that leads to a score.
Tee Higgins, Bengals wide receiver +5000
His best chance would be if Chase was somehow neutralized by Ramsey and Burrow really needed a second receiver to come up big, with Higgins delivering.
Evan McPherson, Bengals placekicker +5000
You have to include this rookie on the list. He’s hit nine of 11 field goals from 50 yards and beyond, and has been cool as a cucumber when it comes to hitting game-winners.
Jalen Ramsey, Rams cornerback +5000
Don’t count him out. If one of the keys to a Los Angeles victory involves keeping Ja’Marr Chase very much under control, and Ramsey is able to do that, and comes up with, say, an interception along the way, he is right in the mix. There are certain factors against him; for example, only one corner has won the award. That was Larry Brown in Super Bowl 30, with two interceptions for Dallas. But Ramsey has always been good at drawing attention to himself, and he’s not all hype, as he is very solidly the #1-graded cornerback from the respected Pro Football Focus.
