The Lightning can Make History in Game 6 of the 2022 Stanley Cup Final

The NHL Stanley Cup Final Game 6 is here. The Tampa Bay Lightning know (or knows, if we’re using the singular) that if they can get things to a seventh game in the Stanley Cup Finals, they like their chances with Andrei Vasilevskiy in goal.

This is one final that has some story-lines. One of them involves the availability of key players. One of them, Brayden Point, got into the action for a couple of games, but has been missing since. The hip injury he suffered against Toronto has simply not healed all the way.

But in that “all hands on deck” situation,how much could he contribute?
Nazem Kadri of the Colorado Avalanche wasn’t even sure he could shoot the puck when he came back from his wrist injury in Game 4. But he managed to score the winning goal in overtime.
And after that goal, Cooper added more drama when he almost meted down in a press conference, because his sincere belief was that Colorado should have been called for too many men on the ice when that overtime goal was scored.
Most observers shot that down, but you couldn’t ignore that penalty when it was called against the Avalanche with 40 seconds to go in Game 5, as it was not only valid, but prevented the Avs from getting a man advantage by pulling goalie Darcy Kuemper.
So, after catching a breath, the series is 3-2 Colorado on the heels of the 3-2 Tampa Bay win.

If Colorado should win on Sunday, you’d have to wonder who would be best positioned to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. Would it be Valeri Nichushkin, who has four goals and two assists in the five games? Or maybe it would be Norris Trophy-winning defenseman Cale Makar, who has scored three goals (eight overall in the playoffs) and logged more ice time than anybody else in the series.
The Lighting Have Turned it Around in the Stanley Cup
The Lightning got six shots on goal and a score from Nikita Kucherov in Game 5, and Ondrej Palat, who has 12 game-winning Stanley Cup playoff goals in his career, did just that on Friday night, Palat has eleven goals in this postseason.
But you can’t doubt that if the Bolts actually win this thing it will be in large part because Andrei Vasilevskiy turned in a couple of stunning performances in goal. So we’ll see how that goes.
It’s first thing first, and that means a win at home. Vasilevskiy’s goals-against at the Amalie Arena is 2.10 in the playoffs, so he could establish a rhythm that will be tough to beat.
But let’s also not ignore that Darcy Kuemper has a 2.68 goals-against in the playoffs, as he has gotten injured, sat out while teammate Pavel Francouz ran up a 6-0 record, and then returned. What some people figured may have been an embarrassment for the Avs could turn out to be an embarrassment of riches.

That having been said, with an opportunity to advance to a one-off game and a chance to become the first team since 1942 to win the Finals after being down 3-1, the Bolts deserve a long look as the home dog.
