Blackjack is one of the most popular table games you’ll find at casinos. While the “luck of the draw” may come into play from time to time, following these simple do’s and don’ts for BJ beginners will have you playing like a pro in no time. Learn how to play the basics. DO: Hit on a soft 17 (with an ace) and stand on a hard 17 or higher (without an ace) Since most casinos force the dealer to hit on a soft 17, players can take a bit of a risk to better their hand, knowing that ace is an insurance policy against going bust. If you’re looking at a hard 17, don’t ruin what should be a winning hand by taking another card. DON’T:

Stand on 12 through 16 if the dealer is showing a seven or higher in Blackjack

Standing on a 12 through 16 is fine if the dealer is showing a four through six, but sticking to your guns when they turn over a seven is just bad math. The Dealer only needs a 10 or ace to beat your hand. Players should also hit on a hard 12 if the dealer is showing a two or three, again needing only a 10 or ace to take your chips. DO:

Split aces and eights in Blackjack

Pulling a pair of aces gives you an opportunity to do some serious damage to the house. Players only need a 10 to hit a Blackjack and a double dose of 10 will quickly increase your pile of chips. Eights are also a live card to split and rid yourself of the tough hand of 16. Splitting eights gives the player a strong shot at a pair of 18s, especially if the dealer is showing a two through seven. DON’T:

Split fives or 10s in Blackjack

Get dealt a pair of fives sets you up for a strong hand, since the two equal 10. Hitting on a pair of fives can easily bring 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21 while breaking them up dramatically decreases your odds and strips a winning hand. The same can be said for 10s. The temptation is there to produce two high hands but pulling a 20 in your first two cards is pretty much money in the bank.
