Standing on a 12 through 16 is fine if the dealer is showing a four through six, but sticking to your guns when they turn over a seven is just bad math. The Dealer only needs a 10 or ace to beat your hand.
Players should also hit on a hard 12 if the dealer is showing a two or three, again needing only a 10 or ace to take your chips.
DO:
Split aces and eights in Blackjack
Pulling a pair of aces gives you an opportunity to do some serious damage to the house. Players only need a 10 to hit a Blackjack and a double dose of 10 will quickly increase your pile of chips. Eights are also a live card to split and rid yourself of the tough hand of 16.
Splitting eights gives the player a strong shot at a pair of 18s, especially if the dealer is showing a two through seven.
DON’T:
Split fives or 10s in Blackjack
Get dealt a pair of fives sets you up for a strong hand, since the two equal 10. Hitting on a pair of fives can easily bring 17, 18, 19, 20, and 21 while breaking them up dramatically decreases your odds and strips a winning hand.
The same can be said for 10s. The temptation is there to produce two high hands but pulling a 20 in your first two cards is pretty much money in the bank.
