Pro Football Picks — Tennessee Titans vs Seattle Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks Football

Can Titans Get Untracked by the Seahawks?

By Charles Jay

If you are a BetAnySports customer and you were solidly on board with the Tennessee Titans in your pro football picks last week, you were sorely disappointed. That’s a bummer, but will it continue? It could against a solid Seahawks defense.

The Seattle Seahawks had no such difficulty getting into the swing of things as they started the 2020 season, winning decisively against the Indianapolis Colts. So they’re going to be a tough nut to crack as the Titans attempt to bounce back at Lumen Field in Seattle. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:25 PM ET.

Tennessee had almost nothing going for it as the Titans lost 38-13 at home against Arizona. There appeared to be very little connection between Ryan Tannehill and newly-acquired Julio Jones. One can only guess that eventually it will develop, but how far off is that?

Like the Titans, the Seahawks also brought aboard a new offensive coordinator. Shane Waldron has brought some tweaks to the situation, and his play calls produced big touchdown plays of 69 and 23 yards out of Tyler Lockett. Russell Wilson threw four TD passes in all, and Seattle took advantage of Carson Wentz perhaps not being all that ready to step in and pilot Indy’s offense.

Titans vs Seahawks — Don’t forget the ground game

We all know about the exploits of Russell Wilson, who has that great ability to improvise and loves to throw the ball down the field. But what you can’t lose sight of is that coach Pete Carroll loves to run the football. The Seahawks haven’t always had the guys on board who could control the line of scrimmage. But Chris Carson holds up his end. He missed time with injuries last year but still averaged 4.8 yards per carry. And this was after topping 1000 yards in each of the previous two seasons.

Carson supplied balance for the Seattle lineup, as he had 91 yards on sixteen carries. So his presence will force Tennessee to account for him. And that’s important.

Titans vs.Seahawks — The coordinators

You probably know that Arthur Smith, who was Tennessee’s offensive coordinator, left to take the head coaching job in Atlanta. In the interests of continuity, head coach Mike Vrabel replaced him with tight ends coach Todd Downing. And perhaps that wasn’t a bad idea, considering that the guy who really made the offense work was running back Derrick Henry.

In Seattle, Brian Schottenheimer left and was replaced by Shane Waldron, who came from the Rams. And maybe the Seahawks were hoping there was a little of that Sean McVay “magic dust” left to rub off on him.

It would appear that Waldron has brought  more different ideas and concepts that are new than did Downing. Given the nature of these transitions, that makes sense. But this is just something different that the Titans’ defensive staff has to deal with.

Titans vs.Seahawks — Not enough time?

Things were choppy in training camp for Tennessee, to put it mildly. Tannehill missed time with COVID, and thus he did not have a lot of time to get acquainted with Jones, who also missed some time. Vrabel found himself on the COVID list as well. This is not so easy when you are saying hello to a new coordinator, even one who was, in a sense, a holdover.

The existence of Henry in this offense makes this easier to overcome than it might otherwise. Just hand him the ball, right?

Maybe, but some solutions need to come from the offensive line. They allowed Tannehill to get sacked six times last week in the 38-13 loss to the Cardinals. Five of those sacks came from Chandler Jones.Taylor Lewan beat himself up quite a bit on social media.

Titans vs.Seahawks — The conclusion

We’re not going to sound the death knell quite yet for the Titans, but the fact of the matter is that there are issues to deal with here.  Logic would dictate that Henry is the guy they will rely on, but If the offensive line can’t work, that’s a killer.

At this moment, it looks like Seattle is the team that is more prepared to go forward. The Titans had their problems with the mobile Kyler Murray last week, and those problems will continue with Wilson, who can figure out a way to beat Jim Schwartz’s pass rush. We’ll lay the points.
