Nats Look to Advance out of NLDS for 1st Time
The Chicago Cubs and the Washington Nationals play Game 5 of their NLDS Series on Thursday when they battle at Nationals Park. The game is set to start at 8:08 pm EST. TBS will have the game televised nationally.
The Nationals are fighting the D.C. sports curse. The city’s four major pro sports teams have played 68 combined seasons without advancing to a conference or league final. That is over 19. The Capitals were the last team to reach a final. That was back in 1998. The city with the next-longest drought is Cincinnati, at 44 seasons.
The Nantionals have been eliminated in the NL Division Series in their previous three postseason appearances since moving to Washington. Getting past the defending World Champion Chicago Cubs will be a daunting task. Will the Nationals past shortcomings factor into how they play?
Washington got a dominant performance by right-hander Stephen Strasburg on Wednesday to side-step elimination. They beat the Cubs5-0 at Wrigley Field.
Oddsmakers have the Cubs as -107-moneyline favorites. The total is at 7.5.
Baker Goes with Gio Gonzalez: Cubs With Hendricks in NLDS Game 5
Gio Gonzalez took a no-decision in Game 2 of the NLDS. The lefty allowed three runs and three hits over five innings. He struck out six and walked two. The Nationals will need another outing like this from Gio to advance. His regular season was up and down during the regular season.
Unless Gonzalez is raking, it is easy to assume Baker will empty his bullpen to get as many matchups in his favor. Even though Sammy Solis and Oliver Perez gave up hits the other day, they’re still good left-on-left matchups if needed.
Kyle Hendricks, who brilliant in his Game 1 win. He allowed just two hits and struck out six over seven innings. Hendricks is 2-2 in five career starts against the Nationals. He is 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA against Washington this season., including the victory last week in Washington.
Hendricks threw 65 percent fastballs in Game 1. That is his second-highest rate of any start this season. He had a season average of 48 percent, and it was a effective strategy to change. He induced eight foul balls and 24 called strikes out of 69 total fastballs thrown. For a guy who throws 87 it proves location is the key.
